      I just recently had back surgery - a spinal fusion of entire thoracic spine and one lumbar vertebra. I am a 28 year old stay at home mom. I cant afford daycare so I keep my youngest at home, and I have two girls in school. I stay busy with basketball, chorus, soccer, play groups, and keeping up with them! I like to scrapbook, listen to oldies (I guess now that is music from the 90's), swim, hike, and play with my kids. I call myself teenytania bcz of scoliosis I ended up being real short but always wanted to be tall :) Two out of three of my kids are off the charts and taller than normal? Weird.. :) I am recovering post op. I gained about 2 inches from the surgery and I keep getting taller as my bottom curve is straightening out more and more everyday.

      Cooking and canning, reading, and photography. Homemade candy is a specialty of mine, even though I dont need to be tasting it :). Scrapbooking is really a passion of mine. I also like basketball but havent been able to play for a while because of my back, but after physical therapy I am going to start playing again. Hopefully.

    • Close Scoliosis

      I have had idio. scoliosis since i was 13. I am now 28 and they are telling me in the past two years my curve has gotten worse by 11 degrees, and also told me that i would need surgery to stop any more progression of the curve.

    • Close Diabetes Type 2

      I have had type 2 diabetes since the birth of my first child. I had gestational diabetes with her and it developed into type 2.(Never went away?) I have had 2 other successful pregnancies thru this and am managing this on diet alone right now. I have lost about 15 lbs, which has helped a lot with it, but have a ways to go.

      Treatments

      Humalog Working / Worked
      I was on this during my third pregnancy - it was used to control very high blood sugar during the end of preg.
      Insulin (Regular and NPH) Working / Worked
      Used this as well during the third preg. I was taking up to 6 shots of about 15 units each time. This many shots were horrible, but was used so my baby wouldnt be huge. It turned out that he was 9 lb. 14oz.
      Metformin Working / Worked
      Seemed to be too much for my body to handle - caused low blood sugar too much when diet was maintained.
      Physical Exercise Working / Worked
      This works great and makes me feel better and helps out with the other health prob I have as well.

    • Open Hypothyroidism

      Along with back problems and diabetes I found out recently that I have a thyroid stim deficiency. I had gained a lot of weight and my hair was falling out really bad so I went, they did the blood test, came back deficient. Since then I have been on the synthetic thyroid meds for about 5 months, and have lost 25 lbs and have a better energy level than I used to. Hopefully the weight will still be coming off.

      Synthroid Working / Worked
      Lost 25 lbs. Hair grew 4-5 inches and quit falling out. Muscle spams are getting better.

    • Open Arthritis

      Found out after having a spinal fusion done that I have arthritis in my spine (still in the parts that have not been fused)

      Tylenol Working / Worked
      Does not help - I am on narcotics

    • Open Depression
      Type: Clinical (Major) Depression

      Have a history of depression since puberty, everytime something life altering happens it worsens my depression

      Zoloft Working / Worked
      Stopped taking my meds and seeing the doctor. Felt as though the doctor didnt want to work with me and was more worried about copays

    • Open Financial Challenges

      Medical bills have pushed us into a frenzy, also payday loans to pay some of those bills are eating us alive. Over the past three years we have spent over $10 grand in interest reborrowing and paying back - we need serious help to get out of these things because now we cant even pay our rent. We are behind and are receiving paperwork to be in court next month.

      On a budget for a while, then let hubby handle bills and now everything is haywire.
      Credit Counseling Not Working
      Tried this and half of the creditors would not participate with the credit counseling agency.
      Cut Up Credit Cards Not Working
      Got rid of all but one but now we are told by the mortgage lenders that its best to have a FEW cards with 1/3 of the balance on them for better credit, we cannot win.
      Debt Consolidation Not Working
      Cannot get credit anywhere due to filing for chapter 7 bankruptcy about 5 years ago. Will not reopen the bankruptcy because cant handle another 10 years of no loans.
      Earn Money Somewhat Helpful
      My husband worked a second job until my surgery on Oct 14th, and we are really behind now because we owe more money than we make.
      Holding a Garage Sale Working / Worked
      Had a big yard sale last summer, spent weeks getting ready and only made about $100 - will not do it again.

    • Open Anemia

      I just found out today about this and do not have much idea what it is about. I was told that it could have resulted from a major surgery that I had in October with major blood loss and no transfusion.

      Treatments

      Iron Working / Worked
      Just prescribed, told to take daily opposite calcium.

    • Open Parenting 'Tweens (9-12)

      I have a nine year old that plays basketball and is involved in the children's choir in our area.

      3rd grade - she makes straight A's

      She has meltdowns sometimes from the added stress of all her activities and my illness.

    • Open Chronic Pain

      Spinal fusion at age 28 of entire thoracic spine and one vertebra of lumbar spine.  To correct severe scoliosis.  Still in a tremendous amount of pain three months post op.

      Treatments

      Cymbalta Considering
      I am going to talk to psych about getting on this med. Everyone that I have talked to that has depression and chronic pain say it goes hand in hand and this really did help them out.
      Flexeril Somewhat Helpful
      Dont see a difference if I take it or not
      Heat Somewhat Helpful
      Sometimes helps, sometimes ice helps. My body is so out of wack, it will decide for me.
      Hydrocodone Working / Worked
      Downgraded to Lortab 10, does seem to work but I need something for breakthru pain
      Meditation Not Working
      Trying this instead of therapy for depression after surgery.  Doesnt seem to be working.  I have three kids so there is rarely time to have an hour to myself to concentrate on breathing.
      Morphine Somewhat Helpful
      Morphine given right after surgery, didnt kill the pain from the surgery entirely, but really did help.  they took me off this the third day in the ICU unit.
      Nerve Blocks Not Working
      Had it put in left shoulder blade, or at least I think that is what is was...it didnt last for too long, maybe I am talking about a cortisone or numbing agent?  Not sure, doc didnt tell me what it was.
      Oxycodone Working / Worked
      Oxycontin worked very well and I didn't get addicted, but my insurance wouldnt pay for it for my condition, they would only pay for it for cancer patients. I couldnt afford the 105.00 copay every week.
      Physical Therapy Too Soon to Tell
      Getting ready to start physical therapy for reinforcing shoulder and muscle strength in the back, no results yet since just starting

    • Open Parenting Preschoolers (3-5)

      I have a four year old that is in preschool. She is great. She has to wear glasses because she is nearsighted. She fights with her siblings constantly.

      Child Time-out Working / Worked
      I dont spank or use force against my kids. We take time outs and then talk it out.
      Education (School) Working / Worked
      In preschool education at the local primary school. She is beginning to recognize words and read. She is also joining the soccer team this year for the first time.
      Patience Working / Worked
      A tremendous amount.
      Positive Reinforcement Working / Worked
      This works very well, at least for now for her

    • Open Parenting Toddlers (1-3)

      I have my youngest, Eric, he is 1 1/2 right now. He is into everything...Having a hard time keeping up after him...

      A lot of patience with this child, he is into everything.
