Hello. I am the mother of a 3 year old with Renal Tubular Acidosis (RTA). She was diagnosed with the illness when she was just under a year and has been taking a liquid medication since then. The doctor has gradually increased the dosage over the past two years and she now takes about 2 oz 3 times a day. My current strategy has been to mix the solution with a kiddie yogurt, but she has now begun to flat out refuse to take it. The scenes (3 times a day) are progressively more and more dramatic, chaotic and nerve-wracking.
I was wondering if any RTA veteran parents out there (or rookies like me....) could offer some advice on how to get the medicine to go down. Something to mix it in? Games to play? Other forms of medication that you know of.
Anything that could make this process less harrowing would be greatly appreciated.
Nearly desperate!

Hi, My son became ill with renal failure at age 3. He is almost 8 now. He has been on bicritra 10 ml 4 times a day, since age 3. It took months and maybe even more than a year to adjust to giving him this and his antibitoic daily.
Not sure what your daughter is taking, but if it is bicitra, she will eventually gain a taste for it, like mine did. He loves the taste of it now. I do not mix it in water. I put it in a syringe and he takes it, then he follows it with a bottle of water.
We get 10ml syringes from the pharmacy about once a year. We reuse them by rinsing them out after used. Once they wear out, just thow them away. We usually draw up a months worth of doses at a time, and keep in the fridge so they are handy.
When he first started taking it at age 3, he threw fits and refused to take it. We finally learned to use the syringe and had to have one of us hold him, while the other slowly squirted the bicitra into his mouth get him to swallow.
Of all the meds he has taken, this is the only one he ever gained a liking to. He still dislikes his antibiotic, but he takes it without too much complaining.
Hang in there.
