    • Close Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis

I was diagnosed in '84 at the age of 25. I had quite a time convincing the doctors there was something wrong. I went into remission really quick one properly medicated but then 3 years later it reared its ugly head and it has been an up and down battle ever since, I had to have a resection in 2002 but couldn't quite recover. I became more ill in 2005 and had to have a feedng tube put in.

      Treatments

      Asacol Somewhat Helpful
it only worked temporarily and then stopped being absorbed. The pill would just pass through my system whole
Avoid Certain Foods / Chemicals Working / Worked
I have found I do well to stay away from acidic foods. unfortunately that means little to no Italian Fresh fruits and veggies do not digest. My intestines are so inflames adn infected that I cannot break down and absorb properly.
      Azathioprine Working / Worked
worked a bit bu tit began to effect my liver counts
      Dietary Modification Working / Worked
feeding tube, FAA. I still experience a lot of diarrhea but at least with the Lomotil I can absorb and hold my weight a bit better
      Entocort Working / Worked
      only temporarily
      Lomotil Working / Worked
makes life a bit tolerable so I can go out a little
      Methotrexate Not Working
      did not help
      Prednisone Working / Worked
worked great in the beginning but the doctors did not monitor the effects on my bones and I fell and damaged one leg. Over the years now it does not have the same great effect it had in the beginning
      Probiotics Too Soon to Tell
      Remicade Working / Worked
worked somewhat well in the beginning bu tit would not hold as long as the doctors said it should
      Surgery Somewhat Helpful
the resection helped to stop the vomiting as they took out what they considered the worst parts that may have been causing the blockages but I didn't get better. I was still not able to go back to work and now I've ended up on disability since I cannot get past teh fatigue and bathroom
      Humira Working / Worked
It is making life a little more tolerable but I still cant work
    • Close Loneliness

I have battled with loneliness most of my life. I thought I had pretty well made it through and was doing better until I was hit with a chronic disease that took me out of the work force and even out of church services and so there is little to no contact with anyone.

    • Open Financial Challenges

I have struggled for years,31 to be exact, with money and making ends meet but have found lots of ways to stretch money and make ends meet so I would be glad to offer our experiences to anyone who may need help. I know how scary it is when there is not enough money to get through the week, especially when you have children. My first husband expected me to feed 5 of us on 10 to 20 a week. I bought a budgeting book but learned to write down EVERY penny you spend to see where your money is going.

      Treatments

      Budgeting Working / Worked
I went to a conference to supposedly get a job doing vending machines and walked out with a new way of setting up our budget. It has taken us from living week to week to having money in the bank for vacations and yearly property taxes adn even right now Christmas monies,
      Debt Consolidation Working / Worked
We were able to take alot of our debt an dput it on 0% credit cards and even though I know many financial counselors will tell you not to do this we were able to do this for several years by flipping cards until we had our debt paid off, We were even able to purchase my husbands car with a credit card check, escaping the large percent fees you usually get caught with but you MUST pay more than the minimum.
    • Open Depression

I have battled with depression for over 35 years on and off. Due to some mild brain damage due to viral encephalitis at the age of 2 1/2 I have a difficult time staying on as even keel. High highs and very low lows!

      Treatments

      Cymbalta Working / Worked
I worked WONDERFUL in treating the depression. There was no fatigue and I was able to function like I hadn't been able to in years!! No need for naps and I was actually able to attend some church services which really added to my feeling better. Unfortunately I have severe crohns and it attacked my liver counts so I had to go off it.
      Lexapro Somewhat Helpful
I helped a bit but had fatigue and couldn't function
      Zoloft Somewhat Helpful
It helps on and off. It causes a bit of fatigue and even helped to slow down the diarrhea from my crohns
