Close Menopause
Hello - I am 55-years-old and I am approaching one year without having a period. I have a history of experiencing severe anxiety during times of hormonal change...I have been taking Klonopin for several years, so thank God, the panic attacks are gone...but I am now experiencing intense depression, along with weight gain which seems to pile on regardless of what I eat or don't eat, or how much I exercise. I'm concerned that this depression will linger...I also am unemployed...
Treatments
- Black Cohosh Working / Worked
- I don't use Remifemin, but another standardized form of black cohosh. I am not sure whether it helps or not...but I have not had any problems with hot flashes, so it probably has...
- Progesterone Cream Working / Worked
- I have used an over-the-counter progesterone cream since I was in my thirties, as I had been estrogen-dominant...now I use an estrogen cream as well (also non-prescribed)...
Close Families & Friends Of Addicts
I am the mother of a 27-year-old alcoholic in recovery. My dilemma is how to help him without enabling him.
Treatments
Open Anxiety
I have a lifelong history of panic disorder, since puberty, which is under control now with meds.
Treatments
- Acupuncture Working / Worked
- Acupuncture helped treat my allergies, which were causing symptoms (such as difficulty breathing) which were adding to my anxiety.
- Breathwork Working / Worked
- Helpful when not in the midst of a panic attack...but was not helpful when having one...
- BuSpar Working / Worked
- Didn't obtain much help for my anxiety with this med...
- Klonopin Working / Worked
- Worked spectacularly...this is the med that finally caused the attacks to disappear...I am very grateful for it...
- Lexapro Working / Worked
- Did not help at all, and also caused me to gain a lot of weight...
- Luvox Working / Worked
- This is the first med I used for panic, and it was extremely effective. It also helped a bit with my underlying depression. Unfortunately, I was told the effect wears off after one year, so eventually, I was not getting the same results from it, and so switched over to Klonopin.
- Meditation Working / Worked
- My spiritual path is very important to me, so prayer and meditation helped me tremendously (to give me strength...prayer did not necessarily take the panic away...)
- Positive Thinking Working / Worked
- Works to an extent, but it is hard to change my basic mindset, which tends to gravitate towards the negative...I also suffer from mild to moderate depression, so thinking positively is difficult for me...
- St. John\'s Wort Working / Worked
- Trazodone Working / Worked
- My psychiatrist prescribed this for me to help me sleep, but I feel all it did was produce bizarre and intensely vivid dreams. I am trying to wean myself off this drug.
- Valium Working / Worked
- This was helpful to me before I started on the Klonopin, but it did not remove the panic attacks completely...but rather, took the "edge" off them... I did not find Valium addictive at all, and was able to go off it overnight...but I realize this is not true for everyone...
- Walking Working / Worked
- I found that walking long distances calmed me down tremendously and also helped with walkingoff the intense adrenaline rushes that I experienced during panic attacks....
Open Panic Attacks
I have suffered from panic attacks for much of my life - they tend to occur during times of hormonal shift - such as puberty and post-partum. I am in menopause now, but medication keeps me from having attacks.
Treatments
- BuSpar Working / Worked
- Did not get much benefit from this medication -
- Klonopin Working / Worked
- This is the medication that finally put a stop to the panic attacks I had suffered from for so long...
- Meditation Working / Worked
- Prayer and meditation, and faith in God in general, were the main factors that got me through my panic attacks...
- Patience Working / Worked
- When I first started having panic attacks, I wanted them over with immediately, and had no patience, but I found that enduring the attacks made me into a much more patient person...out of sheer necessity...
- Positive Thinking Working / Worked
- I think this can be very helpful with some individuals. I tend to also be mild to moderately depressed, so it is difficult for me to maintain positive thinking, although my spiritual path is the most important thing in my life, so that is very positive...
- Psychotherapy Working / Worked
- This helped with some therapists - the social workers - (licensed certified social workers who can do psychotherapy ) - I find that most psychiatrists are terrible therapists, but are good with medication - I did have one good female psychiatrist who helped with the emotional issues...
- Rescue Remedy Working / Worked
- I did not find "Resuce Remedy" effective at all...
- Trazodone Working / Worked
- This medication was prescribed for me to help me sleep. I do not find it effective, and want to wean myself off it.
Open Financial Challenges
I have been unemployed since 2003 - I am a social worker with an MSW. My husband supports both myself and my adult son, who also cannot find a job...we are really floundering financially...
Treatments
- Budgeting Somewhat Helpful
- Credit Counseling Working / Worked
- Debt Consolidation Somewhat Helpful
