S. A. D. Mood
Sunday, October 25, 2009 | A Call For Help story

Have any of you used the special lights that are sold for S A D ?

I'm looking for some first person input about them, as to how best to use them, and what results you have experienced.

Thanks Donna, for the warning that they can be overused ....... I have to wonder what the indications of that would be .......?

I bought one last year toward the end of the season and can't say that I saw any measurable effect!

I would love to know how to use it to its best advantage and know what to realistically expect from the use of it?

Thanks guys, I know I can always count on some honest feedback from many of you ....................

I don't get S.A.D. but I do notice a slight 'funk' during the darker months.

I just turn on a regular bright light on in the room I pass the most that gets me down. Even though I'm never in it, it just feels like 'life'. It's also the room that gets the least sun in the first place, so if all the other lights in the house are mostly off, I don't feel guilt about having that one light on most of the day.

It's a nice lamp too, was a wedding gift. Seeing it lit, just also has meaning.

Maybe you need to get a new fancy schmancy special lamp for yourself? Even if it's a faux Tiffany or something. Something that makes you smile when it's lit. Or, have a silk tree with the little white Christmas lights on all the time.

Oops, like a ficas tree. Ficus? The houseplant kind of tree, not a pine.

Karan, that is so funny, I do hve a faux Tiffany at my bedside, and often keep it on because I like it so much, AND I've always wanted to do exactly that with a silk ficas (or whatever)! Maybe I'll do it for this Christmas and just pretend that I keep forgetting to take it down :). I'm doing a complete change of almost everything in my livingroom in the new year, so maybe ths is the time to add my sparkle tree!

Hello. I use a light box for SAD. I've used it for three seasons if you count this one. Therapy should begin here in Illinois about the end of September...but I grew distracted this year and did not get started until last week . I stop in the spring around the middle of April.
Daily therapy is for 15 minutes..... 1st thing in the morning, when you are having your morning coffee....reading the paper....ect.
There is a specific adjustment to the placement of the light box so it is correctly functioning in correlation to your eyes. I'm not sure which light box you own but mine is from "Day Light" and was prescribed by my Psychiatrist. The web address is http://www.day-lights.com/
I get some relief from my SAD by using this but it is not extreme.
I do note that if I go past the 15 minutes in the morning, then I will have problems with sleep at night. It will alter circadian rhythms so you need to be careful and cautious of over exposure.
I find that a short trip to Florida or Arizona in the middle of winter is the best medicine, although..... costly!
Please feel free to message me with any of your questions and I will be happy to help.
