Has-beens

I have been a liar. I have been an insult. I have been a bully.

I have been a soldier. I have been a crutch. I have been a killer.

I have been a crier. I have been a rock. I have been lost.

I have been a father. I have been a mate. I have been a  loser.

I have been broken. I have been beaten. I have been abused.

I have been picking my scars. I have pointed my finger. I have been afraid.

I have been harboring anger. I have moored up hate. I have useless aggression.

I have been nurturing pain. I have killed remorse. I have broken sympathy.

I have been labeled a freak. I have been labeled a monster. I have been labeled a lot.

I have relished in those. I have grown that mystique. I have made a mistake.

I have been my own worst enemy.

Now I am a man. Now I am a husband. Now I am a dad.

Now I am a confidante. Now I am a friend. Now I am becoming whole again.

Now I can see. Now I can breathe. Now I can feel!

Now I am open. Now I am clean. Now I can make it.

I will be a good man. I will be a pillar. I will protect those who protect me.

I will move with purpose. I will live with self-worth. I will value others.

I will be trustworthy. I will be sympathetic. I will be an example.

I will be better tomorrow than I am today. I will make a difference for someone.

I will save a life. I will be complete. I will love myself as others love me.

I will be that kid my mother remembered.
