    • About Me

I am a 42yr old mum of 2 boys, married for 21 yrs. I work with children with Autism and i am currently in the middle of a degree in Education. I am waiting for an opperation for a gastric bypass, which i see as the final piece in my lifes jigsaw puzzle. When i have had this operation and lost some of the weight i need i am going ice skating, swimming and on the biggest roller coaster ride i can find.

Hello everyone, I work with children with ASD. I spend a lot of my day dealing with challenging behaviour and implementing strategies to modify this behaviour. I really enjoy my job and have been fortunate enough to have built up a 'bank' of resources, which have proven to be affective.

      Treatments

      ABA Working / Worked
Always ongoing. Excellent tool for modifying behaviour as it links to interest/motivators
      Behavior Management Working / Worked
To many strategies to list. This catagory can link with most of other interventions listed. This i would say is most important. Children can only become open to learning when the unwanted behaviours are reduced.
      Facilitated Communication Working / Worked
      Floor-Time Therapy Working / Worked
Excellent tool for interaction allows you to enter the world of the ASD child as the therapy is child-centred and lead by the child.
Independent Living Skills Working / Worked
This is sooooooooooooo important. To be able to enable a child to complete a task independently is the greatest gift you can give that child, however, BE CAREFULL IN TRYING TO DEVELOPE INDEPENDENCE YOU DO NOT CREATE A CHILD WHO IS DEPENDENT ON THE VERBAL PROMPT- THAT'S IS NOT INDEPENDENCE
      Occupational Therapy Working / Worked
Sensory integration and a knowledge of the sensory issues affecting a child with ASD. Gaining knowledge in this field is a must.
Picture / Word Schedules Working / Worked
I use the PEC'S (picture exchange communication system and also TEACCH. Brilliant gives the child another form of communication, which can only limit outbursts due to frustration.
      Sign Language Working / Worked
Makaton, Helpfull as another form of communication and handy to use when a child's tolerence has fallen and they are not receptive to speech your or theirs.
      TEACCH Working / Worked
I love TEACCH. I have had the privalege of meeting and attending the TEACCH course given by Dr Steven Love. This system has been used in my workplace for many years and is extremely successfull.
