Close Diverticulitis
I have had 2 confirmed cases of acute diverticulitis over the past 2 1/2 years and each resulted in significant pain and a trip to the emergency room. I was put on antibiotics and the "flares" cleared up after a few weeks, but now the doctors are recommending elective surgery. I am awaiting a consultation with a surgeon, but feel that this is an extreme measure. I would like to hear from others who have had surgery and find out how it affected your "quality" of life afterwards.
Treatments
- Cipro Working / Worked
- In conjunction with flagyl, it helped clear my infections. However, it left a terrible taste in my mouth and my tongue had a white coating on it. My pharmacist said that is because the cipro killed bacteria in my body, including all the "good" bacteria (which is also located in your mouth).
- High Fiber Diet Working / Worked
- It helped keep my bowel movements regular and pain free, but you need to drink a lot of water with this diet.
- Levaquin Working / Worked
- My pain subsided after 14 days on levaquin, but a colonoscopy 3 months later revealed my colon was still infected and filled with pus.
- Dicetel Working / Worked
- My gastroenterologist prescribed this medication for spasms in between flare ups. It does seem to help.
