Close Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis
I was diagnosed with Crohn's when I started high school. In spite of being gone a lot, I managed to keep my grades up, but didn't get to have much of a social life. For over a year now, I've been in a continuous flare, and it's been absolutely brutal. I'm used to just pushing through pain, but it's just gotten too bad. But things are starting to improve a little bit, so I'm really hoping to go back to school in the fall.
Treatments
- Asacol Somewhat Helpful
- I didn't experience any awful side effects with Asacol, Pentasa, or Rowasa, and they seem to help a little bit. I think.
- Avoid Certain Foods / Chemicals Working / Worked
- I've completely changed my diet recently. No more junk food, and not much fiber. I don't really eat sweet stuff anymore, and I'm avoiding most processed foods. It's helped so much. I didn't even know I was so sensitive to certain foods until I stopped eating them.
- Colazal Not Working
- When I started taking Colazal, everything got worse. Not good.
- Entocort Working / Worked
- Entocort helped get rid of the crazy sore thingies on my legs. I can't spell the name of it though. :)
- Prednisone Somewhat Helpful
- The first time around was awful. I had all the typical icky side effects, but I kept getting sicker. Now I'm on a much lower dose and that seems to be helping
- Probiotics Working / Worked
- Yay probiotics! I eat lots of yogurt and Kefir now, and they've definitely been helpful.
- Purinethol Not Working
- I don't really know if this has ever helped me. I've been taking it since I was first diagnosed. It didn't help then and I've been sick a lot, so I don't know.
- Remicade Somewhat Helpful
- Remicade was AWESOME! I was able to live a relatively normal life again and eat almost anything I wanted. But I became allergic to it. That was BAD!
Close Depression
I have Crohn's disease, which affects everyone differently, but for me has meant constant trouble for the past year. I've been stuck at home being miserable a lot for various reasons. Mostly, I'm too sick and exhausted to go out and have fun, and I'm just not interested anymore. I was only able to go to college for about two months because of my Crohn's, and after coming home things only got worse. I haven't been able to do anything I want. That's enough to make anybody depressed.
Treatments
- Psychotherapy Too Soon to Tell
- I've only just started going to a therapist recently, and she seems all right. I don't know if it's worth the trouble, though.
- Support from Friends & Family Somewhat Helpful
- My family has definitely tried to be supportive throughout everything, but sometimes there's only so much they can do.
