It’s been a long road titrating up to 100 mg of Lamictal. The side effects have been numerous, including cramps in my stomach, hands, and feet, chills, tingling in my fingers and toes, and aching so badly that I felt like I had the flu. Perhaps the lowest point was when the medicine made me so weak that I was unable to walk. There were times that my hubby had to carry me in order to help me move around the house. Most of those side effects have worn off now and I am feeling better than I have in months. However, I am still encountering periods of short-term memory loss and the occasional trouble finding and/or spelling a word that I have known for years. I also continue to have vivid dreams, including some where I am composing music in my sleep! Despite these dreams, I am sleeping pretty well most nights, and the earlier insomnia has worn off.
I am concerned about the impact the remaining side effects (particularly the memory loss and spelling problems) might have as I attempt to return to work, but the benefits of Lamictal still significantly outweigh the potential burdens. I can actually envision going back to managing and training an office or teaching students the difference between C major and c minor. A couple of months ago, I couldn’t see beyond my front door.
It feels great to be able to step out into the world again! : )
