I’m With You
After total knee rep and rotator cuff rebuild I also am being treated by a pain specialist. I really feel torn between taking the meds to feel normal and feeling like a drug addict at the same time. Very depressing. Guess we have to hang in there, what's the alternative?

Close Chronic Pain
I lost my job, my mom, divorced, my alcoholic ex-husband got residential custody due to our judicial court and he was required to quit drinking for 3 years, attend AA for 3 years, and substance abuse counseling for one year. After a 3 year divorce and 2 lawyers, all I could get was he could not drink to excessive!!
Treatments
- Acupressure Not Working
- very painful
- Heat Not Working
- ice works better
- Morphine Working / Worked
- Need help stopping this medication but can't go back to severe pain as I became bedridden and not functioning.
- Nerve Blocks Not Working
- was years ago
- TENS Not Working
- did not like it and did not work
Close Alcoholism
I attend AA meeting daily even though my drug of choice was perscription meds. I have severe chronic TMJ pain and crossed the line of taking "as perscribed" to building up a tolerance. When this line was crossed I resorted to the internet for additional meds as in my "addict mind" if I could order it on line then it was O.K. Also during my divorce I drank alcohol for the first time in my life (age 43 at the time) and was a closet drinker. My husband at that time and still is an alcoholic.
Treatments
- 12 Step Program Working / Worked
- Attend AA or PA (pills anonymous) daily. Have not used since 6/18/2008.
- AA Meetings Working / Worked
- Continue to go daily and after intense out patient program in July I work the steps, talk daily to my sponsor, pray, ect.
- Detox Working / Worked
- Spent 5 days in June for pain meds. Did go through alcohol withdrawl in 2001 when I broke my shoulder and was in the hospital for 8 days. Never drank again.
- Outpatient Treatment Program Working / Worked
- July 2008 30 day out patient program for pain meds yet attended AA daily and worked steps 1-3
Open TMJ
It began when I was 20 from a bad accident and my jourst ney has not stopped. First 20 years had no narcotics (2 arthrioscopic, 30 mouth guards, tens, biofeed back, sleep studies, pt, Mayo Clinic, accupuncture, teeth ground ect.) Became bedridden and started narcotics. Crossed the line about 3 years ago. Detox 6/2008. Pain now treated with anti convulsants ect.
Treatments
- Mouthguard Working / Worked
- After about 30 different mouth guards, use this one for several years. Covers my two front teeth.
- Arthroscopy Not Working
- Had two and did not help at all.
- Biofeedback Not Working
- Tried for several years. Even had portable machine that would wake me up every time I ground my teeth. Lasted couple weeks!
- Acupuncture Not Working
- Tried once and when they put the needle in my left temporal muscle I almost passed out from pain.
- TENS Not Working
- Tried this twice and hated it.
- Physical Therapy Not Working
- Went 2 years to PT that specialized in TMJ. Enjoyed heat treatment but did not help.
Open Prescription Drug Abuse
I have severe chronic pain (tmj) for over 30 years. Tried every treatment, test, operation there was to avoid taking narcotics. One day I became bedridden with the pain and had a choice, start narcotic meds perscribed by a pain specialist or remain in bed. I chose meds and eventually crossed the line to addiction. Have been through detox, rehab, and now doing 12 step meetings.
Treatments
- Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Working / Worked
- attend AA/NA/PA and after care every day
- Residential Treatment Center Working / Worked
- Subutex Working / Worked
- works awesome. take 1 mg twice daily
