try to remember Mood
Tuesday, July 22, 2008 | A General Update story
do  you can remember going out for trick or treating without an adult, not haveing to have treats xrayed or even getting homed treatsfrom complete strangers. you will enjoy this.  a friend sent it to me and i pass it on.  considerit a eaCONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, nuts, eggs and didn't get tested for diabetes and we didn’t suffer allergies.
Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts, car seats or air bags.
Riding in the back of a van ‘loose’ or on the parcel shelf, was always great fun.
We drank water from the garden hosepipe and NOT from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were OK.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no text messaging, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
We played with worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out any eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned
HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!
And YOU are one of them!
CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.
And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

So true........I remember all of those things.......and here is one.........we had garage doors with only metal handles on them to open them.........well we would tie two ropes to them and jump double dutch when we didn't have enough friends coming over yet.........usually we had plenty of friends over..........and hopscotch instead of graffiti...........and climbing the backyard fence to go to my girlfriends house and play in her crabapple tree house...........we learned not to eat crabapples more than once!!! They are more sour than lemons or limes!! LOL.........and we would have playful fights with them..........I had a swimming pool..........and everyone on the block would come in my back yard and swim with me..........fun, fun, fun times............and sleeping in the back yard with my parents and dog in sleeping bags in the summer..........i had so much fun during my grammar school years!!!!!! Very fond memories!!!

I remember all this stuff. Yep, I'm old! I loved my childhood. It was good clean fun, we all looked after each other. Everybody's parents looked after other people's kids. We helped around the house, we respected each other's property, we all went to church together....family really mattered!!
Oh I miss those days. So glad I'm not raising a child in this day and age. Respect is a thing of the past, drugs are out of control and happiness is rarely found in a marriage anymore.
I'm so thankful for all the good memories of my childhood. It keeps me goin!!
    Nice post Kathy!

This is the best journal I have read in a long time. I have been wondering why kids need $2000 worth of gifts at christmas and another $200 for their birthdays. Most of the time I was growing up christmas was a sin - well so were birthdays but I survived so why can't kids today live with less material stuff and more activity. There seems to be more excuses for over weight kids and low achievers than there are reasons for all this to happen.
Stuffed with deep fried foods and sitting all day on their asses watching tv and playing video game is the main reason for all the FAT kids in the world
I find the overall overweight of the country is disgusting and worrisome.
Well have a wonderful day Dear
    Thanks for sharing

Fetal alcohol syndrome. We do things differently these days because we know more. And not all kids are fat. Mine don't play any video games, are limited on their tv and play outside everyday. In my children's class of twenty each, there are no fat kids. Things aren't so horrible. Bike helmets protect our children from accidents your generation went though. All of the kids I know are respectful and family matters in my community. Everyone that complains about America today should look at other countries around the world. Things are good for us. Safety locks and all.

I never knew a kid that should've had a helmet on 30 years ago there was never any accidents with them.
now kids play with real guns n kill eachother , I meet disrespectful people almost everyday now now.
from kids on up to adults ,
it was alot nicer way back when in alot of ways.
last week I got burned on my face really bad from pizza sauce at a pizza joint, I didn't realize how bad it was until the next day , alot of people were saying I should've sued them, get reall people it healed up about a week later,
that's one reason many places are shut down now is people are sue happy it makes insurance rates go up at places.
