    • About Me

Hi, I am a single mother of 2 boys, (1995, 1998). I am a Child Development Specialist, I received my B.A. in Child Development at California State University Northridge. My youngest son has High Functioning Autistic Disorder and is gifted. My older son was diagnosed with ADHD Inattentive subtype and Dysthymic Disorder. My older son is also gifted, and has been reading books on quantum physics since he was 10 years old. Do to the fact that the local school district refuses to accommodate his needs, I am removing him from the district and have enrolled him in a free online public charter school called Insight so he can receive the individualized attention he needs.

I love this show as well. My "Leonard" is a 17 yr old high school JR and every thing is about history, politics. He has to watch at least 2 hours of news daily. And when the Nov O8 election was going on I do not think his tv was ever off.

    • Close Autism / Autism Spectrum

My son was diagnosed with HFA in 2007 at the age of 8. Just looking for other parents who have a similar situation to share what has worked and what has not.

      Treatments

      Family Therapy Working / Worked
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) Working / Worked
      NLP works for many things.
      Art Working / Worked
      Attachment Parenting Working / Worked
Definite improvement in social skills and ability to form bonds with others.
Avoid Certain Foods / Chemicals Not Working
Tried avoiding milk and gluten, no help
      Behavior Management Working / Worked
He is in a very structured "Level" system program at school. The check his behavior every 15 minutes and he gets rewards for good behavior and he can lose levels for unwanted behaviors.
      Casein-Free Diet Not Working
This did not work even when all hidden milk products were removed from his diet.
      Counseling Working / Worked
      Early Intervention Working / Worked
I have a B.A. in child development and have been working with my son from day one. Most people do not know he has HFA until I either tell them, or they spend an extended amount of time with him.
      Floor-Time Therapy Working / Worked
My kids have always had access to floor time and lots of stimulation.
      Gluten Free Diet Not Working
This did not work, and have not seen any change in behavior when gluten is removed from his diet.
      Love Working / Worked
Love is important in all things. It may not be apparent right away, but you will see little things that show it is reciprocated when they feel they can reciprocate. It makes everything you do feel worthwhile!
      Occupational Therapy Working / Worked
I have OT supplies at home. He uses an exercise ball for a chair, and for prioperceptive stimulation and vestibular stimulation. I am in the process of making him a weighted blanket as well. He sleeps better when his movements are restricted
      Patience Working / Worked
Patience is one of the most important interventions. I love the analogy of using computers to explain our kids. Most people run on a windows operating system. Our kids on the spectrum run on either an apple or a Linux system. It takes time and patience and practice to learn their operating systems, but it is well worth the effort.
      Pets Somewhat Helpful
I have had him around animals in the past. He seems to really connect with them. He talks to them, and seems to have a greater range of emotions around them.
Picture / Word Schedules Somewhat Helpful
I have lists on the doors of expected behaviors, and schedules of what the day is supposed to look like. He sometimes follows it and sometimes doesnt.
      Play Therapy Somewhat Helpful
He has play therapy with his therapist who comes to the house.
      Positive Reinforcement Working / Worked
Behavioral intervention works very well, but is time and energy dependent and intensive.
      Positive Thinking Working / Worked
      Socializing Somewhat Helpful
Socializing works when on his terms, but he is easy to overstimulate and it is easy for him to lose ground when forced to socialize.
Support from Friends & Family Working / Worked
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Working / Worked
      Definitely working!
    • Close Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

I was diagnosed with CFIDS in 2001. Nothing the doctors have given me has had any real effect. I do take provigil when I need to, but I try not to take it because it makes other symptoms worse.

      Treatments

      Celexa Not Working
Took this for depression a few years ago but it did not help with the fatigue. The doctors said it would be better than paxil because it is less likely to cause fatigue.
      Massage Working / Worked
      Paxil Not Working
Took it for depression a few years ago, but it did not help the fatigue.

      Treatments

      Education (School) Working / Worked

      Patience Working / Worked
Patience is always necessary when raising kids :-)
