    • Close Colon Cancer
      Stage: IIIB (T3-4, N1, M0)

Diagnosed with colorectal cancer Mar08. Had high anterior resection of the colon. Good news they got all the visible cancer, bad news it spread to the muscle and lymph node. 8 months chemo, finished Dec08. In remission. Hadn't drank or smoked for 10 years, and exercised 2hrs every day before diagnosed with colon cancer. Nutrition was excellent and no odd bowel movements. Friend was dying and urged me to have a colonoscopy, so I did. Feeling great now, back training martial arts 5 days a week.

      Treatments

      5-FU Working / Worked
Makes you feel blah, but it passes.
      Chemotherapy Working / Worked
Side-effects were minimal up until chemo no.10 when neuropathy kicked in and I have numb fingers and toes and have pins and needles in my feet. Nausea drugs help, but always have a sick feeling. Head in bowl a bit. They will pass. Reflux on weekend following chemo. Not tired as I've stayed active, but got very tired towards the last few treatments.
      Oxaliplatin Working / Worked
Mild side-effects during chemo. Couldn't drink/touch cold items for 5 days following Oxy. Neuropathy kicked in last treatment, and got worse 4 weeks post chemo. No feeling hands/feet due to nerve damage. Can function okay though, drop things now and then and can't grip anything too well. Some muscle slowness with overuse of hands. Feet feel like sandpaper stuck in snow. Sometimes lose balance, but that can be comical more than anything, probably because I'm sober.
      Surgery Working / Worked
5cm cancer growth removed from high anterior colon. No stoma bag. Quite painful, Morphine for 1 week, and 12 days in hospital. Cancer spread to lymph node and muscle, so adjuvant chemo. All visible cancer removed.
    • Close Alcoholism

Had a pretty unhappy childhood. Mum died from chronic alcoholism, and I masked my grief and continued the vicious cycle until I woke up one morning and saw my Mum in the mirror, but it was me. Placed myself in Rehab, went to AA and have been sober 10 years on 23May.

      Treatments

12 Step Program Working / Worked
Enjoyed this experience which gave me self awareness and I continue to work the steps in my sobriety.
      AA Meetings Working / Worked
Best thing I ever did. My GOD (Group Of Drunks) gave me my 1st reality check and I came to realise I wasn't alone and help was available.
      Willpower Working / Worked
I had to want and commit to recovery. But for the Grace of God...
    • Open Brain / CNS Tumors
      Type: Other

In about 86, developed prolactinaemia. Discovered Pituitary tumour and continued to have it monitored until 94 when it doubled in size. Had tumour removed transphenoidally. Prior had numerous hormonal problems, one being no children. Fell pregnant two months after surgery and have a beautiful daughter. Developed 'empty fossa' syndrome as a result.

      Treatments

      Surgery, Brain Working / Worked
Felt like a chipmunk after surgery, but it was a good result. 7 days in hospital, and recovered quickly.
    • Open Back Pain

Shattered lower vertebrae. Had sciatica down left leg, developed to a crippling stage. Surgery followed (Lumbar laminectomy) and was 75% invalid. Nope, wasn't going to accept that, so underwent intensive physio, aqua rehab and acupuncture. Set goals for myself. Took control, and got active. Worked it hard, and achieved black belt in TaeKwonDo 8 years post surgery. Miracles happen, if your mind allows.

      Treatments

      Acupuncture Working / Worked
      following physio
      Physical Therapy Somewhat Helpful
twice a week for two years.
      Stretching Working / Worked
      daily.
