The destruction
Before the fire this was a thick Mountain Ash forest on the flood plane of the Stevensons River. About ten metres a minute type going if you got of the track. Now there are more massive Mountain Ash trees down than there are standing. Each tree is about 40 metres tall. The fire and the drought combined have dried out the flood plane so much that in the days after the fire the trees just fell over. Mountain Ash are my favorite trees in the whole world. Their hard wood timber is straight, its beautiful to handle, its beautiful to build with. This species of tree is so noble, it commands respect. Its a tragedy to see the destruction. Almost the entire eco system is descimated.
