Yesterday I had my second doctor's appointment at my neighborhood clinic. Before going there, I knew I had to talk to the doctor about the Zyprexa I'd been taking. Since I was new to mood stabilizers (2 weeks ago I'd been officially diagnosed with bipolar) I'd been taking only 1 pill a day--and had recently realized that that isn't enough because I'd begun experiencing hypomania. Very upbeat, more energy and activity than usual. Normally--about 80% of the time--I've expressed the depression side of bipolar--low energy, tired and achy, as well as sad.
At the doctor's office I discovered another problem with the Zyprexa--weight gain. I'd put on about a pound since the last appointment. Since I gain weight easily, this was not good news. And the doctor's also concerned about my blood sugar--he wants to check it in a couple of weeks.
So now I'm on Depakote. Which is one that's not supposed to cause weight gain. And it's a greater dosage which means hopefully my moods, energy level, etc., will be better under control. Wish me luck!
