I've had both yin and yang going on in my life lately. In February before I started seeing a GP for my bipolar I'd tried to get help from the Human Service Center. To make a long story short, I was unable to, because people like me who weren't already undergoing mental health treatment weren't considered part of their "target population." One of the people who talked to me also said there'd be a long wait to get into a program.
Then I first saw my GP and got the Bipolar dx and prescriptions--and while I started seeing a social worker who's a counselor, I wasn't seeing a p-doc, so I wasn't totally getting the help I felt I should be getting. Also, lately I don't think my meds have been working that well and have been having some side-effects .
Several times my GP had recommended I contact the Human Service Center, but because of the bad impression I'd gotten after trying to get help from then before, I'd held off. Then last week he said I should call the Human Service Center again. So on that Wed. I called the Human Service Center, mentioned that I'm being treated for bipolar and named the dr. who'd referred me. Soon after that I heard back from their intake guy who asked me to come in for an appointment the next day! I was shocked to get in so quickly. He's a really nice guy, not bad-looking, and gave me an extremely detailed, informative overview of the treatment program.
Now I'm enrolled in orientation classes called "Start Now," after which I'll be coming in for outpatient group classes 4 or 5 times a week for about a year. I also have my first appointment for a psychiatrist Mon. and hope he'll figure out what's what with my meds.
