    • About Me

I am an MS Support group leader in the State of Oregon, a researcher, writer, & grants writer. I hold degrees in Sociology, History, Middle East Studies, and African Studies. For the supprot group I founded a few years ago, we have a no charge to MS'ers and sig's catered lunch once a month, a chat series, 2 MS Yoga classes, an MS seated Tai Chi class, and lectures by MS specialist physicians. For the support group I write a newsletter twice a month which I have given the name of "Things Our Neuros Forgot to Tell Us." I serve on the Board of Directors of an independent living center (where I was elected treasurer), serve on the ADA-Info-Oregon Advisory Board, am a Community Consultant on Survivability (NIH grant to improve survivability of women with disabilities who have experienced abuse of any form), and University of Oregon Board of Directors. I volunteer withr the MSAA, the MSF, and the NMSS. For the latter I have served on the Programs and Services Committee for a few years. I live on provigil!!! I use a power scooter for long distance mobility, as I do not drive.... I use lots of Rx's and a lot of herbals and vitamins to deal with my MS and diabetes. I also have thyroid disease, diverticulitis, narcolepsy, sleep apnea, spinal scoliosis, obesity, allergies, and physical disabiltiies from being hit and run over by a pickup truck in '83. I have dealt with a lot of severe discrimination, particularly at the University of Wisconsin's Departments of Sociology and Rural Sociology. This led to MY decision to NOT complete the PH.D. Program, which I had a 5 year independent fellowship for. They swore I would never work professionally ever again after speaking up about their horrific discrimination, and they succeeded in that - but I have still made a life for myself by my persistance and perseverance. I would have moved overseas where their arms could not reach to influence my life, but the MS I developed from the stress of enduring their several years of repeated acts of discrimination prevented living in a Third World nation. Discrimination is unfortuante. It means our universities are not seats of learning, not a chance for a new beginning, and professors wear blinders based upon their bigotry/biases. They are far from able to make rational decisions based upon objective facts. More often than I would like, things take me back to those days and I become angered (truthfully, livid - nightmares and the whole ten yards). I do not like admitting that I live with an underlying level of anger daily for those who did this to me. At one time, I even considered electric shock therapy, if the procedure could have guaranteed to erase the horrific memories of what was done to me. Instead, like so many others of this world who have experienced bigotry, jealousy from others, deceit, and evil, I have merely endured and have survived! For those who have not experienced discrimination, I am thankful. For those who might have a friend or associate facing discrimination as a protected class member, do all you can to be supportive of them, and to support their actions to defend their rights. It is the absolute only way to end discrimiantion so that you, your children, and grand-children will not have to live in a world where they will have their life's chances ruled by anything other than their talent, abilities, and intelligence! It will NOT disappear on its own, so please do not turn a blind eye to those who might need your support. One really never gets over discrimiantion because it takes away from those discriminated upon what they have worked so hard to achieve. There is no forgiveness for those who discrimiante for it is identity theft. Tthe root source of this and other evils in the world is jealousy by those who are clearly less competent. One of my absolute favorite friends has recently begun to call me Professor Leanna, and I love her for it! I was raised in rural America, and proud of it. My fatrher had a 3rd grade education and my mother an 8th grade education, so I surely do not believe one needs to have an advanced degree to be worthy of respect. My family had a small one-room house, no running indoor water or plumbing, no electricity, and I learned to cook on a wood stove, which also heated our home. I learned that a home is far more than the walls surrounding a family. Families give us our stamina for living. They are the most integral fact of our lives - and ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO STRENGTHEN FAMILIES, WE MUST DO FOR THE HUMAN RACE TO EVOLVE! I own a cat, or, rather he owns me. He is quite angry at me lately, and depressed, because I have too little time for him. Otherwise I live alone, and enjoy the peace....although having someone else to blame the clutter on, or to help with the house cleaning and chores might be nice (I do have a home care worker, but unfortuantely they have all been dimple heads and unreliable). I am an organic gardener, following a long tradition of Mennonite background (Some of my ancestors help form the religion). I quilt and sew. I enjoy baking new recipes and sweet breads, even though these days I have such litle time for myself and for cooking/baking. Two of my favorite foods to bake and eat are carrot bread and pumpkin bread. One of my favorite foods is smelt (a small fresh stream fish), but pollution has dwindled its runs from when I was a teen and would net them myself. I am a shy person, and rarely engage in conversation - but if asked a question, I usually respond in a pleasant manner, so feel free to ask. I am also fairly busy, so it might take me a couple days to get time to reply, but just give me a reminder if I forget to respond.

      Laugh for the Day

You are on a crowded bus when you suddenly realize you need to fart.

The music is really loud, so you time your farts with the beat. You
      let
go about 5 strong and loud ones back to back.

After a couple of songs, you start to feel better as you approach your
      stop.

As you are leaving the bus, people are really staring you down, and
      that's when you remember:

......you've been listening to your iPod

    • Close Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
      Type: Seconday Progressive MS

I have had MS for about 25 years, diabetes for 20 years, sleep apnea, and use a C-pap machine. I like high quality cuisine. I have experienced a lot of severe discrimination due to my disabilities, and have an ongoing problem that my mind goes over and over the events time after time, never letting go, and driving me crazy at times. I would like a friend to share writing/editing. I appreciate friends who are intelligent, motivated to be independent, & making the most of their lives.
