Hug
Loss is intense, death tough, processing painful but healing. What you are doing in the midst of everything else reflects who you are...you are a loyal son, commited family man and a great, supportive friend. Peace.

Close Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
I had a massive ileofemoral DVT in 2004 after a skiing accident (my history of Lupus/MCTD was a contributing factor). It presented atypically, and was left untreated for over two months. I was pretty sure I would never ski or ride a bike again, and that I would be on blood thinners the rest of my life. However, with good medical care and physical therapy, I am off blood thinners and I can ski again at the same level, though I still have a lot of pain on some days.
Treatments
- Coumadin Working / Worked
- It worked, do everything your doctor says with diet, exercise and alcohol, it did make me feel strange at times, no big deal, activity restrictions are tough.
- Lovenox Working / Worked
- I was on it for 10 days. You get used to injecting yourself. Definitely do not drink to excess, this made me lightheaded. Have someone in the house the first few times you do the injections, they don't have to watch... it just makes you feel better not to be alone the first couple of times.
Close Parkinson's Disease
My mother has PD 15 years. I hate this disease more than almost anything I can think of.
Open MCTD
I was diagnosed with lupus back in the '70s before they had the antibody test, had high fevers and muscle pain and pericarditis, treated with steroids through my 20s, was able to go off them, DVT 4 years ago = sports injury + MCTD. Now my RNP (or anti RNA or whatever) is positive, my main symptoms are headaches and some muscle and joint pain-- symptoms have changed over 30 years! Very active, entertainment industry executive, black diamond skiier, but this can get scary and painful sometimes!
Open Bereavement
Type: Loss of a FriendI lost one of my best friends on February 2nd. We met in '78 and prowled the streets of New York for almost 30 years-- shot video together, played clubs together (and endless jam sessions) he hosted my bachelor party, convinced me to move to LA where I found my job and met my wife and he was really my Catalyst. He died of TCC-- really wicked cancer-- and I am finding that grief takes very unexpected forms.
Treatments
- Getting Angry Working / Worked
- Ski double black diamond slopes. Dangerous at my age and medical condition, have to be careful, I don't give a f*ck sometimes
- Keeping Busy Working / Worked
- Yes, it works, very important.
- Music Working / Worked
- Loud rock guitar, but reminds me too much of our great jam sessions
- Pets Working / Worked
- Couldn't get through without Z.
- Prayer Not Working
- Useless. Great for other things, save the big guy's help for when it's most needed, this is my thing I have to deal with.
- Psychotherapy Working / Worked
- Excellent. Warned me this would be bad so I was prepared, helps me with unintended consequences.
- Remembering Working / Worked
- Yes. Better with friends, coremembering I guess that would be.
