Close Nystagmus

I have had vertical nystagmus for 13 months. Prior to that I had diplopia for nearly two years. My question is this, I have read on the internet that one of the tests for DUI is observing nystagmus symptoms at a roadside sobriety test I have read that alcohal causes nystagmus. I used alcohal until seven years ago. Can a person get nystagmus from alcohol use seven years prior, or do the articals only refer to current use such as a roadside sobriety test? Thanks much. Jibby
