    • About Me

I'm an educator, advocate, and activist. I am working against school and government corruption on sbschooltalk.com and joincac.org (Consumer Advocacy Coalition was formed after Mental Health cut our supports and services rather than their administrative salaries.) I urge all DS Beepers to visit these websites and find bliss in pursuing your passions and a purposeful life. I walked across the United States (on the Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament), and live in the mountains above Santa Barbara, California. I married my husband in a ritual marriage of opposites---I was The Princess and he was The Stranger---on the Great Peace March; we have two wonderful children. My son is a student at Prescott College; my daughter is mentally retarded, but she has taught me a great deal about patience and understanding. I have a long story to tell.

      From smartygirl2 August 2

      Hi Kate,
I really liked the Dr Seuss quote you sent me. I hope you are having a great weekend.
I am feeling a little fragmented at the moment. I am supposed to be packing for our move, but I am absolutely aching all over. If the painkillers kick in, I'll get on with things. Hope you will have a lovely week. What are your birthday plans....and did you manage to live your year 'out loud' (I love that). Do you know your birthday is 2 days before we move...so just in case things get any more hectic, I want to wish you a Very Happy Birthday in advance. What is your theme for this coming year? Hugs, Ellie x

    • Close TMJ

I developed TMJ after having dental work. I went to several dentists and finally found specialists and a great TMJ physical therapist in my own back yard. I'm okay, but I have a great deal of tension in my jaw.

      Treatments

      Mouthguard Working / Worked
    • Close Bipolar Disorder

I was re-diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Makes so much sense---I have ADD with occasional mild depression and hypo-mania. PTSD resulted from an epic and landmark legal battle over my special needs daughter's educational rights. I won, but lost much more than I bargained for. Off medication, I practice Tai Chi and Qi Gong for physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. I value my DS friends and online support. Check out www.sbschooltalk.ning.com!

      Treatments

      Abilify Working / Worked
Abilify was great, but it affected my libido, I developed tardive dyskinesia, and I flat-lined, so I went off it.
      Depakote Not Working
I was a zombie on this stuff.
      Wellbutrin Working / Worked
I was on Wellbutin XL for three years but am off all medication now. It was "school-district-induced" depression!
    • Open Scoliosis

The school nurse found 45 degree curves when I was thirteen years old. Dr. McMaster took my case to the 1963 AMA convention and they decided against surgery, opting for a body cast for two years. Now, I have 69 degree lumbar and dorsal curves, so it's pretty balanced, and I manage the pain with Tai Chi and Qi Gong.

      Treatments

      Brace Working / Worked
In 1963, they had body casts. I was wrapped in plaster from the top of my head down to the middle of my butt. It was changed every two months. I don't know if the braces of today have a different effect, but I was recently told that body casts were not effective.
    • Open Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

I suffer from Post-Trumatic Stress Disorder from a 1975 rape at knife and gun point and from seven years of school district retaliation in a landmark and epic battle for educational rights, IDEA and ADA issues. Complicating matters is rare genetic anomoly---a missing protein---so I have angio-neurotic edema. Stress can trigger "fight or flight" but I can't stop the bio-chemical release and my throat swells so that I can suffocate in twenty minutes. Interesting.

      Treatments

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Working / Worked
      Rape Counseling Working / Worked
      Talking Working / Worked
