Last week, we met with a nutritionist who advised us to not purchase Goldfish crackers again. My son went 4 days last week eating Goldfish only (and was constipated for 4 days too), refusing to eat any other foods. Having to administer enemas isn't the most fun. His usual diet (while the rest of us at table are eating highly diversified foods), is crackers and breakfast cereal without milk. This week, he actually ate chicken that wasn't in the form of a fried chicken nugget. I made Chicken Royale (yogurt, golden raisins, almond slivers, and Indian spices from Madhur Jaffrey's recipe book). He also ate rice, apples, Dannon vanilla yogurt, and pieces of cured ham (after I asked him to just "put his tongue on the hame - don't have to eat). Teaching him to taste without the obligation to eat was a huge milestone. He did attack my slice of chocolate cake my husband had brought home for me with full force (loves chocolate cake like his mommy). Everyone says go gluten free, and really if you look into it, there are lots of foods to eat out there that are tasty that have no gluten. But I really don't like the bakery item gluten free breads, cookies, cakes, flours, etc. I've tried several gluten free bakery items from Whole Foods that cost an arm & leg and tasted yuck. Instead of bothering with "substitutes" such as gluten free pasta, etc, we are going to avoid gluten by just eliminating those kind of foods all together (crunchy cereals, breads, crackers, etc). I'm looking into making homemade rice cakes with coconut, etc., like those made with rice flour (some possible recipes: http://www.aaa-recipes.com/riceflour/riceflour.html. )Worth a try.
