3/15/08 (Saturday): Ryan (my son with Asperger's) runs away from playgroup across field to another playground structure without letting me know (what's new?). He disappears from sight. Finally get to meet a few other parents dealing with Asperger's in person. One mom got diagnosis of HF autism for twin sons, and got in with the Regional Center. Asperger's alone, if no significant speech delay, doesn't qualify for Golden Gate Regional Center services in California (where I kept getting referred from Support for Families). But after escalating to the Director of Golden Gate Regional Center, we were denied services (age 36 months is the cut-off they said & now Asperger's is in the hands of the UPSD- public schools). The public school system, via an IEP, is where everyone with Asperger's is sent. Our IEP is coming up this Friday, after many months of paperwork and observations, testing, etc. After the Asperger playdate, my son spent about 5 minutes frantically trying to reattach a granola bar that had broken in half when I opened it for him. Near nervous breakdowns or full meltdowns occur frequently during each of our days, when things aren't just as planned or imperfect (or if he's not in full control of activity). If activities or events don't go just as routine, we often have to repeat the full routine again and do it right. As usual, several children attempt to play with him at playground, and he ignores their "HI"s and attempts to play. Ryan walks away happily playing alone. I had brought some kid-sized tennis rackets and balls and kids really wanted to play with him. Today, FIRST success getting him to use a public toilet (had been too afraid in past). YEAH! Evening, his little sister wants to watch Dora the Explorer, he always runs to room slams door, and crieds, "It's too scary." I turn out the lights in house (his job), so he turns them all back on, then goes around again to turn them off! Uggghhh!

My son was diagnosed with a learning disability when he was 6years old by the school system....he had his first IEP but never diagnosed with AS. I wasen't aware that the school system could test him for this.
Do they?
