If We Ever Were
I hearken back to younger days
Never better, just less known
The unknown world that lay ahead
Until innocence is mauled by time
What is childhood, but a fearsome thing?
The baleful thing that lurks
Behind the curtain of portending adulthood
It whispered into uneasy ears many a night
"You will look into the eyes of lost light"
"And take the number 19 to a dead end road"
And there I would sit
Waiting for you to arrive
And tell me it would be okay
But, it never was okay
And you never showed up
And you never came into my room at night
To slay the demons of my youth
So that as adults we could hearken back
To days in the park and rehearsals at school
And I would peer out into the crowd
At a smiling father waving back at his daughter
I hearken back to younger days
Never better, just less known
The unknown world that lay ahead
Until innocence is mauled by time
What is childhood, but a fearsome thing?
The baleful thing that lurks
Behind the curtain of portending adulthood
It whispered into uneasy ears many a night
"You will look into the eyes of lost light"
"And take the number 19 to a dead end road"
And there I would sit
Waiting for you to arrive
And tell me it would be okay
But, it never was okay
And you never showed up
And you never came into my room at night
To slay the demons of my youth
So that as adults we could hearken back
To days in the park and rehearsals at school
And I would peer out into the crowd
At a smiling father waving back at his daughter
