I have solved the riddle
of a three year old girl
gaining enpowerment
simply by dressing my daughter
but now you turn away from me,
"Grandmother," you cry," Mama doesn't
do it right."
and all the muscles in my heart
must hold
because I understand the truth
in which she already perceives-
her Mama
didn't and still doesn't
do it right.
Still, little hurt girl with a
second-string mother,
I do know this-
the tiny pink bows
on the white anklets
must be turned
outward for the world
to know, to understand
you are a girl-child
and the pink bows
will help them see you
and help them remember
the respect
in the words they are to say.
