I had my appointment with the weight management clinic yesterday. I didn't think it had been so long, but turns out it's been 6 years since my first visit. Probably closer to 5 since the last time I was there. When last I spoke to him we'd left it with trying to deal with my Lymphedema first, then going back to deal with the weight after since setting up an excercise plan wasn't an option then. Now he's singing a completely different tune.
He recommended Gastric Bypass again, the Roux en Y or Dudenal saying it was my only real option. Said if I'd gone for it when we talked before I'd be so much better off now. Gee thanks.. so supportive. (Sigh) Left there feeling pretty beat up despite him telling me as I was leaving that this is not my fault, that "we" don't blame people for genetic conditions and this is certainly a genetic condition.. HMM why don't I feel better..
Seems I've gained over 100 lbs and 1 1/2inches on my heck in the last 5-6 years. That's frightening.
He seems to be of the mindset that I'm wasting my time with the dietician and that this treatment is my only option. I'm tipping the scales at a ghastly weight, and I'm pretty freaked out at the moment. I know part of is is lymphedema, but not all..
According to a site he gave me to look at I could lose 237 pounds in the 18 months after surgery.. pretty impressive.. though I keep thinking of a girlfriend of mine who had the surgery years ago and was so so sick afterwards.. couldn't seem to eat anything. I always swore I'd never go that route... but it is certainly tempting to think that I could lose my type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, among other things in 2 years time..
I would love to hear from others who have done this, to hear more about it all from those who have been there..
Thanks for the note. It's encouraging to hear a positive report. So far my family members (aunts mostly) have been trying to scare me from having the surgery. One of them has been quoting parts of a dr. Phil segment with little info to back it up, so frustrating. How long did it take your Future FIL to lose his weight? Did it plateau or is he still losing?
There's a counter on the site where you put in your height and weight and percentage you want to lose and it tells you how much you'll lose. Though it suggests 65% as an average number. It quoted it over 18 months for the loss.. but that still leaves me at a fairly high weight (though losing 237 pounds is nothing to sneeze at), I wonder if it plateaus or if you keep losing after that point...
