Trees
by Sergeant Joyce Kilmer
1886-1918
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of Robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Snow, this is one of my favorite poems! Thank you so much for posting it. I had not read it in a few years. I often think of it though, when I'm out gardening, or hiking. I'm a literal tree-hugger!

I'm so happy that this little poem's being so well received. It's listed in a little book titled, One Hundred and One Famous Poems. Older editions of this book have old photos of the poets. (The guy who wrote"Trees" is shown as a WWI soldier wearing his helmet, and seems to have died in military action). I've been carying this little collection of poems around with me for over thirty-five years now.
