    • About Me

I have had chronic illnesses (fibromyalgia and diabetic neuropathy) for a while but am unbowed by them. Recovered alcoholic, Methodist Local Preacher, Tattoos aplenty. Have a 14 yr old granddaughter. Fell in love with NY when I went there in 2006. I practice as a psychotherapist. My avatar is way better looking and cool than I am in real life!!

Football!!!: (To all of you Stateside, I mean soccer.) Have supported Tottenham all my life and that will never change but I love to watch Arsenal play (for U.S folk, they are deadly rivals) I go regularly because they play wonderful football and their facilities and ticket prices for people with disabilities are superior to Tottenham! Music: Clapton, Springsteen, Lofgren, kd lang, Daughtry, Kellie Pickler (owp! there goes my credibility), anything early 70's (credibility takes another nose dive!) Reading: Ian Rankin, PJ Treacy, Mark Haddon, Lynne Reid-Banks, Chaim Potok, Isabel Millar and anything related to work! Love pub quizzes too and we've even started winning!!!

I was on retreat back in April and one of the things that we looked at was motivation and maintaining momentum.

    • Hug

      From BIGBEARSHEART November 2

I was the first US Air Force military child born in Keflavik, Iceland. 1955 was the year of birth. I loved my child hood because there was no mother or father around, totally left to my own imagination. Loved to take off and walk everywhere. My mother was always being taken away to a mental hospital, her whole life she suffered Paranoid Schzoid. Voices and all. She was an insest victim, father the instigator her mother knew and lost her mind, died in a mental hospital.

Military family offspring s suffer major association skills, out of always moving . Started drinking at 10, stop at 36 and the rest is open for more arguing with you! lol lol a whole bunch!

      From BIGBEARSHEART November 2

I lived in a town which had an US Air Force Base called
Bushy Park, I was five and this was in 1959-60. Kingston was the name of the next train stop from our town and London was approx 30-45 minute train ride.
We used to go to a larger amusement park next to, Big Ben as a child and my favorite ride was the Water Roller coaster which had a major splash at the end. Loved it! My father loved to camp so we would travel all over for summer vacations, had to cut one years vacation because my sister had split her had wide open in a landfill dump located next to our campsite located on the Cliffs of Dover.

My father has relatives in Scotland, can't remember the clan but he showed up one day wearing his kilt, of course no boxers underneath! lol

Used to tease the Guards at Buckingham Palace, seeing how they wouldn't flinch a inch, like statues!

Even left crumpets and tea for the Bobby s while they walked the streets at night. House had tulips and roses everywhere and remember eating carmel popcorn in the movie theaters.

Attended off base schools and had to wear those goofy uniforms as well, even the little caps. Dorkish!

My father loved a car then called the Hillman Minx. Even bought the station wagon version and had it shipped to France when we moved there in 1961.
Poor car, first trip to Paris a freight truck ran into the back of it near the Effel Tower!

    • Close Chronic Pain

I have fibromyalgia and diabetic neuropathy - which currently, is the pain that is giving me the most problems!

      Treatments

      Cymbalta Too Soon to Tell
Trying this as last resort before trying a nerve block!
      Meditation Working / Worked
increases my ability to cope with chronic pain rather than treat the pain itself
      Nerve Blocks Considering
I may have to resort to this if Cymbalta doesn't work!
      Neurontin Working / Worked
works in part and alongside other meds
      TENS Not Working
      Made the pain worse!
    • Close Alcoholism

I am a recovered alcoholic and have been sober since 12 January 1994. Went to AA meetings only for three years and surprise surprise I picked up again. Began to work the 12 step programme and hey! I haven't had a drink since, neither have I wanted one.

      Treatments

12 Step Program Working / Worked
I recovered doing it, now I live it and have a cool life.
      AA Meetings Working / Worked
only worked when accompanied by working 12 step programme. It's not designed to work without it.
Residential Treatment Center Working / Worked
It pointed me in the direction of the 12 steps and AA, that's why it can be seen to have worked
    • Open Fibromyalgia

      Treatments

      Acupuncture Not Working
stopped having it as it caused my pain tgo worsen significantly
      Elavil Working / Worked
Amitryptyline has had a significant effect on my pain levels as it's action is to raise one's pain threshold rather than treat the pain itself
      Neurontin Working / Worked
difficult this one as I take Gabapentin for diabetic neuropathy rather than specifically for Fibromyalgia
      TENS Not Working
similar to the effects of acupuncture for me
    • Open Self-Injury

I used self-injury as a way to cope with overwhelming, painful feelings/emotions. I have recovered and want to support others in their journey through it if I can

      Treatments

      Group Therapy Working / Worked
I sometimes hated it, but along with other therapy it eventually helped and I recovered.
      Psychotherapy Working / Worked
I was fortunate to have a wonderful therapist, who managed to convey his empathy, love and care for me without ever saying it. He saved my life!
      Tattoos Working / Worked
I have had quite a few tattoos and do not feel that they have anything to do with SI in my own case. That is not to say it isn't the experience of others! I had most of them long after I ceased to SI.
    • Open GERD & Heartburn

      Treatments

      Domperidone Working / Worked
It works sometimes, it depends whether I do other stuff like not eat too late
      Prevacid Working / Worked
Worked for a while but have had to supplement it with Domperidone
    • Open Diabetes Type 1

Got diagnosed in 1999 with Type 2 but 8 months later, the pancreas packed up completely. Have had several hospital admissions with DKA, which was pretty bad. It's weird on this site because blood sugar is measured differently to here in the Uk.

      Treatments

      Levemir Working / Worked
Taking 78 units at night but still morning bm high. Tried splitting it but my bm got even more weird!
      NovoLog Working / Worked
Not much to say here, I eat, I take it, hopefully I get the dose right, if not ... take extra. Taking about 42 units with each meal.
    • Open Urinary Incontinence

      Have urinary incontinenece

      Treatments

      Cymbalta Not Working
Nothing changed when I took it.
