Journal Entry for December 2, 2007 Mood
Sunday, December 2, 2007

Although this would not be a very popular decision among all the owners of the indoor play areas, I'm tempted to recommend to my patients to try and keep out of them during the mid-Fall to Springtime.  Now don't get me wrong as I've thrown a few birthday parties at these establishments and I do think it is important to develop a strong immue system (which I think these indoor play areas contribute wonderfully to), but every time I enter one, I assume some sniffles/sneezes or possibly a stomach ailment will soon follow in my household.

Take last weekend, for instance, when I brought my youngest two to a birthday party (father is a life-long friend) so it was great for me to catch up with him and a few other parents I don't get to see as often anymore, but at the front door was a large pool of vomit (which was being cleaned up).  I didn't even flinch as I'm never surprised with this anymore but I carried both of them around the vomit and into the play area.  I heard a few sneezes, coughs throughout the play area but of course I let my 10 month old roam a bit (and she had a great time).  And sure enough, within 48 hours, the nose became a faucet and her smiles turned to cries...now she's hanging in there at the present time and it was my own fault in letting her down to roam, but I'm really tempted to just keep them out for 1/2 of the year.

Nah, I'm not that rigid and I'm sure we will be at another one sometime soon but just wanted all the parents out there to be warned.

Happy Holidays,

Dr. Jeremy

I hear you. Every time I take my twin boys (2 1/2) to an indoor party they bring home something (cold, stomach ailment) These businesses really need to do a better job at sanitizing to reduce these germ fests.

I hope its ok if i ask you a quick question about this journal entry...my son has been at home w/ me since birth. I knew how "serious" an illness was in a newborn and we kept him out of the public for 3 months...no one could touch him w/out handwashing for 3 months or even a bit longer. He has been sick so INfrequently.....i am wonder if its a problem....he started preschool in sept. and i figured he'd now start getting sick---still not even a cold. He has only had 1 HUGE cold at 12 months, and maybe 3 to 4 "sniffle and sneezing mild colds", a bunch of fevers here and there (going away quickly) and a couple of rashes. (all seem by his Dr) could he be too healthy? he goes to playgrounds all the time when its nice (i'm in NJ so--its too cold now) i wash hand or use gel VERY OFTEN. could a kid be "too healthy"? could it just be his genetically strong immune system, plus good sleep, nutrition, contant handwashing and avoiding--whenever possible-- excessively germy places? the stange thing is is---he wasnt even breastfed. (except 3-4 times)...i am happy he is so healthy, but worried there could be a downfall..(ie--weak or undeveloped immune system)..he's even used to go to "music together" and gymboree all the time...is it a problem he is not sick often? (I hope that doesnt sound too dumb!) thanks....
