I have been waiting for yesterday for quite some time. My oldest has been playing soccer a couple of years now but yesterday we stepped it up a notch as my son began his soccer playing days. For those with more than one playing sports on the weekend it can be quite hectic, particularly if game times are overlapping but yesterday there was a good 3 hours between my children's games. That probably had the greatest impact on me as I nearly had a rare afternoon nap only to realize it was time to head to the late afternoon game.
Some of the hightlights included my daughter scoring the first goal of the season and her leaping into the arms of her teammates. In fact, half of her team of 6 scored yesterday which is always great to see. With my son who is not yet 4, it was a different start to the season. For the first 1/3 of the game I noticed him trying to push players from the other team away from the ball (and up until yesterday, I have always thought he was of the peaceful type). Finally, I pulled him off the field after he delivered a rather blatant "red-card" out of no-where push. I explained that this behavior wasn't acceptable and he agreed to curtail it from here. He played it pretty fair from there and nearly scored a goal at the end only to trip over the ball before the final kick...landed him over the ball and flat on his tummy...with the ball a foot behind him. I forgot the video camera but I promise that will be forever implanted somewhere in my memory banks.
One follow up...I asked after the game why he pushed the other players and his response was "they were in the way of the ball". I paused for a second as, at first, there was some twisted logic to his thought process but reiterated what I had stated earlier.
And one more follow up...the two soccer plays slept very well last night.
All the best,
Dr. J

I loved your son's response about kids being in the way of the ball. Little ones are so concrete! My girls are grown and my grandkids not yet involved in sports. Thanks for the memories! Hugs and more hugs, Donna
