Close Depression
Type: Clinical (Major) DepressionI've stuggled with depression since I was 19. I've recovered and relapsed several times throughout my life. Currently I'm in a prolonged period of severe depression, hospitalized four times in the last two years. My motto: "This too shall pass."
Treatments
- Seroquel Working / Worked
- I have not experienced voices like before since I've been taking Seroquel. I do occasionally hear odd noises, but not terribly disturbing.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Somewhat Helpful
- This is helpful, but not a good exclusive therapy for me. I still need to explore feelings and causes of my depression to try to understand my depression.
- Effexor Somewhat Helpful
- I used Effexor for five years. It worked well for a while but eventually lost effectiveness so moved on to another antidepressant.
- Lamictal Somewhat Helpful
- I was told this is a mood stabilizer. Since I started taking this it does seem that my mood has stayed elevated better, but I still experience difficult times (like the holidays).
- Paxil Not Working
- too many side effects for me
- Pets Working / Worked
- I don't know what I would do without my pets. They are my solice and comfort, unending and unconditional love and support.
- Positive Thinking Somewhat Helpful
- I try to always have a positive attitude. Learned some tools toward this in behavioral therapy.
- Prozac Not Working
- too many side effects for me
- Psychotherapy Working / Worked
- This has worked well for me at times in the past. There are times when the depression is so low that I'm not able to talk about it.
- Seroquel Working / Worked

- Trazodone Not Working
- I don't remember my experience with Trazodone, but I was switched off it over a year ago.
- Wellbutrin Somewhat Helpful
- I used Wellbutrin for five years along with Effexor. It worked well for a period of time, but eventually switched to new meds as this became less effective. It also caused trembling in legs and when I tried to write.
- Writing Working / Worked
- I've kept a journal and blogged for several years. It has always been a tool for distraction and relaxation.
- Zoloft Not Working
- too many side effects for me
Close Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
A 17-1/2 year abusive marriage left me gun shy, literally. A horrible divorce and lost custody battle left me almost paralyzed. It's been a long, lonely road.
Treatments
- Art Working / Worked
- I have a journal is which I draw and color rather than write. My profile pic came from it. I can get lost in it.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Somewhat Helpful
- Can be helpful, but need talk therapy with it.
- Effexor Somewhat Helpful
- Worked well for several years but became dangerously depressed while taking Effexor so after five years I changed to Cymbalta.
- Paxil Not Working
- too many side effects for me
- Psychotherapy Working / Worked
- This has been most helpful along with meds. I need to understand the reasons for my disabilities.
- Reading Working / Worked
- calms me and lets me slip away from reality for a while
- Seroquel Working / Worked
- This has worked for me better than any meds I've taken. No voices or scary sounds and it helps me sleep.
- Serzone Not Working
- too many side effects for me
- Supportive Care Working / Worked
- I have a case worker and another supportive care worker who check on my three times a week. I tend to isolate without them.
- Talking Somewhat Helpful
- This helped but brought out a lot of bitterness with which my family and friends lose patience.
- Zoloft Not Working
- too many side effects for me
Open Bipolar Disorder
I've suspected I was bipolar for several years but just recently begun tratment. Still no diagnosis.
Treatments
- Abilify Not Working
- rash
- Lamictal Working / Worked
- It seems to be keeping my mood pretty even, although I still have minor fluxuations.
- Risperdal Not Working
- Stopped taking this after initial weight gain.
- Seroquel Working / Worked
- I can't get by without my Seroquel. I'd never sleep with the racing thoughts if it didn't keep them away.
