    • About Me

I'm a U.S. Marine's wife and a stay-at-home-mom of four children, ages 7 (boy), 4 (boy/girl twins), 1 (boy). As for the diagnoses in my family, I am Bipolar, my husband is ADHD, PTSD, and an addict, our oldest child is also bipolar and ADHD, and our 4-year-old son has ASD/PDD-NOS. Our lives are tumultuous, to say the least!

    • Interests

Knitting, reading, sewing, spiritual growth, visiting with friends, watching movies, having a clean, orderly house (haha), and watching/helping my kids grow and learn. I love to research ways to make life better for myself and my family, whether it be related to marriage, parenting, personal growth, spirituality, stress-relief, saving the environment, arts and crafts, or whatever else strikes my fancy. :)

I finally found an excellent residential treatment center (RTC)that would accept my oldest son. He's been there since the end of Feb and it's hard to only have him home once a week but it's what he needs. He's a high functioning Aspergers (PDD-NOS), ADHD combined, ODD, Gifted child. So I can empathize.

    • Close Bipolar Disorder

I was diagnosed with rapid-cycling Bipolar II at age 24. My sister, my father, and my aunt all have some form of it, too. I am trying to take an aggressive approach to controlling it for the sake of myself, my husband, and my children.

      Treatments

      Group Therapy Considering
I would like to try this, but haven't found a local one yet.
      Holistic Health Somewhat Helpful
Taking a "complete" multi-vitamin every day definitely seems to boost my energy levels, and maybe helps my moods. B-complex is supposed to support mental health, too.
      Lamictal Working / Worked
Loved it, but had to go off it when I got pregnant.
      Lexapro Working / Worked
Loved it... took it for 4 years but stopped taking it when I got pregnant.
      Zoloft Working / Worked
Currently taking it as its my only option now while Im pregnant.
    • Close Autism / Autism Spectrum

Just found out that my 3-year-old son might be mildly autistic. Not surprised; I knew he was "special", but still in shock. Need support!

      Treatments

Avoid Certain Foods / Chemicals Somewhat Helpful
I already try to stay away from artificial additives for all of my kids... so it's hard to tell if things would be worse WITH them (not willing to go there!).
      Early Intervention Working / Worked
He is in a preschool that we all love... they are very accommodating to his needs. He will be starting speech therapy soon.
      Facilitated Communication Considering
Part of the study we will participate in.
      Occupational Therapy Considering
Don't really know what this is about, but I know it's a recommended course of treatment.
      Patience Working / Worked
It's not hard to be patient with him... he's so sweet and good-natured.
      Pets Somewhat Helpful
We have a dog that he loves, but might have to get rid of her because she's too hard to handle (runs away a lot). Considering a true therapy dog, though.
      Picture / Word Schedules Considering
Our local CARD chapter has tools for this that we will try.
      Play Therapy Considering
There is a local study we might participate in.
    • Open Parents of Children with ADHD

My son, Robby, was diagnosed with ADHD just shy of his 4th birthday. He is 6 now and we have gone off the meds in favor of more proactive treatments. He now takes Attend and Calm Child, which are drug-free supplements, and they DO help! We also started him in behavior therapy, which is slowly helping, too. I encourage outside play, and we have adopted stricter routines and discipline policies at home. So far, we are all surviving!
