    • Close Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)

My 5year old was diagnosed with ODD at 3 1/2. It was a very harrowing time. He was almost kicked out of daycare because the caregivers couldn't keep him in the classroom or in time outs or anything. Over the summer, it seemed to get worse. My ped. sent me to a behavior psyc. telling me that meds were a last resort. In only 2 sessions, the psyc identified it. After meds, it is so much easier to deal with, but he's had to up meds or change meds about every 6-8 months so far.

      Treatments

      Child Time-out Working / Worked
It took a lot of work on my part, but I finally have him complying (most of the time) and sitting for his amount of time!
      Focalin Working / Worked
      wears off quickly
      Positive Reinforcement Somewhat Helpful
Focusing on praising good things has helped some of the issues disapate. Not perfect though and can't be done on it's own.
      Risperdal Working / Worked
it seems to work. He's on the smallest dose imaginable.1/2 of the smallest dose made.
      Ritalin Not Working
With the meds, he has space/time to think about his actions and decide if he wants a war. Most of the time he'll choose the right thing now, though battles still happen. He had a lapse and even upping it didn't work.
    • Close Parenting Preschoolers (3-5)

I have a 9 year old girl and 5 year old son. My daughter is a bright, caring child who tries to be the mommy hen to her brother. My son is diagnosed with ODD and probably has ADHD and is a unique character. He loves pirates and star wars-his fav. char. is "dark bader" (Darth Vader). He is my challenge.

      Treatments

      Patience Working / Worked
With his meds helping him calm a little, he now can reason a little. With patience and consistant rules, he's made a turn around, but some days patience is hard.
    • Open Parenting Big Kids (5-8)

I am a mom of 2, 5 year old boy and 9 year old girl. My daughter is very bright. Sometimes that makes her think she's an equal. She's very sweet and caring, but she's seen my son's ODD behavior and tries to refuse to do things too. She feels I give too much attention on him and I know that it's somewhat true. I try to play with just her, but unless he's asleep, he has to be part of the action.

      Treatments

      Child Time-out Working / Worked
      Listening Somewhat Helpful
      Positive Reinforcement Working / Worked
