    • About Me

Disabled/retired for the last 7 years, I have 2 cats (here's one of them) who keep me company and provide terrific distraction from my pain and other assorted symptoms. I am an artist who works in wood, ceramics and my garden. I am a political progressive who supports freedom of speech and the pursuit of happiness. I have a sister and brother who have FMS. My mother, who died 2 years ago also had it. I am a voracious reader and film buff.

I love my cats too. When I feel really bad and can not get out of bed my orange cat named Tony lays with me. I lay there listening to him purr. It relaxes me. Happy Valentines. Mary

    • Close Fibromyalgia

      Treatments

      Acupressure Not Working
Caused additional pain, discontinued the treatments
      Acupuncture Not Working
      MUCH more pain after treatments
      Aqua Therapy Somewhat Helpful
Can only use hand-held showerhead due to other conditions being aggravated (rosacia)
      Cyclobenzaprine Not Working
      Elavil Not Working
      Guaifenesin Not Working
      TENS Not Working
I couldn't STAND to have even the lightest level of electricity applied. Hurt when applied, hurt HORRIBLY after.
      Ultram Working / Worked
This saves my life. I had to jump through some hoops to get my HMO to pay for it. Of course, there is the constipation, but worth it.
      Vitamin B12 Not Working
Didn't notice any change, good or bad.
      Clonazepam Working / Worked
This is a wonder drug for helping me get some decent sleep. I wouldn't take it and try to drive and I love ago gave up alcohol. You'd be in big danger to take this and drink.
      Stretching Working / Worked
The only exercise I can do without pain. In fact, this can help me work out the tense, painful areas. MUST BE DONE CAREFULLY...EASY DOES IT.
    • Close Interstitial Cystitis (IC)

My condition is likely connected in some way to the fibromyalgia I also have. Mother had this too and was one of the first people in the country to be treated with DMSO.

      Treatments

      Pyridium Working / Worked
Doesn't work effectively alone. I also take another drug.
      Atarax Working / Worked
Together with the pyridium, usually does the job. Very stress-related for me.
    • Open Obesity

      Treatments

Avoid Certain Foods / Chemicals Working / Worked
Over the years I have eliminated more and more foods. I guess it's working, although I have continued to put on weight because of other issues (fibromyalgia). If I still ate fat and sodas, I guess I'd be as big as a house.
      Cycling Working / Worked
Did work, but can't bike anymore because of other illness
      Physical Exercise Working / Worked
Worked when I could work out. Can't any longer because of fibromyalgia. Don't know where to go now. Current diet looks like an eating disorder and I'm still fat.
    • Open Sexual Abuse

I endured a medical procedure during childhood that is no longer performed because of the reactions of the girls who had this done. My research tells me that almost no male children had it done.

      Treatments

      Art Working / Worked
gardening, ceramics, drawing, quilting. Anything to keep my hands busy really. I also have fibromyalgia so can't do any of these for very long due to pain created.
      Music Working / Worked
I like listening to sound effects to calm down, like waves on the shore (my favorite) or rain. Any kind of tones are helpful. I sometimes use a gong as a meditation aid.
      Talking Working / Worked
My sister and I both endured these same abuses and talking to each other and supporting the memories is very helpful. Makes me feel less crazy.
      \"The Courage To Heal\" Working / Worked
    • Open TMJ

My teeth never fit together properly, but the TMJ became problematic the first time I tried to quit smoking. I chewed pack after pack of gum, trying to alieve the nervousness and the next thing I knew, pop goes the jaw. Now I have arthritis in the right side which sounds like sand when I open and close my mouth

      Treatments

      CranioSacral Therapy Somewhat Helpful
I do my own version of massage on the outside and inside of my mouth several times a day. This helps me more than anything else I do.
      Mouthguard Somewhat Helpful
Causes me to wake up at night. I already have horrible insomnia, so I only use when I have no other choice.
    • Open Rosacea

My mother had rosacea, so when mine first showed up right around the time I became menopausal, at least I knew what it was.

      Treatments

      Doxycycline Working / Worked
REally, I don't know if it does much at all. With the treatments/lifestyle changes I've made, I still have aggravated red, blotchy skin.
      MetroGel Working / Worked
This seems to be the best thing I've tried. Feels great when I put it on and relieves the worst of the redness.
    • Open Diabetes Type 2

I am diagnosed as "pre-diabetic" and want to educate myself on ways to keep those numbers in check.

      Treatments

      Dietary Modification Not Working
Have only lost 5 pounds. It's very difficult to maintain my focus on proper servings, although I eat all "good" food.
      Eating Healthier Foods Not Working
Lost only 5 pounds. I think that serving size is an issue for me.
