    • About Me

I am a middle-aged (gack!) computer professional. Personally, I have anxiety issues (social anxiety mostly), which are fairly well under control. Recently, my wife of 18 years was diagnosed with Bipolar 2. Bipolar disorder runs in her family, so this diagnosis has always been a possibility, but it still has taken me by a little bit of surprise. She discovered this site, joined, and let me know about it as well.

    • Close Family & Friends of Bipolar

My wife was just diagnosed with Bipolar II (2?), discovered this site, and sent it on to me. So here I am. We are currently working through getting her back on a even keel, so all support will be appreciated.

    • Close Anxiety

I have always been considered "shy" but deep down inside my shyness was really caused by social anxiety. Growing up, avoidance worked pretty well for me when the anxiety became too severe, but two years ago the anxiety became unbearable which led to a pretty deep depression. Paxil has helped immensely with both the anxiety and depression.

      Treatments

      Paxil Working / Worked
I've been on Paxil now for a little over two years, and it has been working fine for me, although lately my social anxiety has been creeping back into my life. The only apparent side effect has been a "lack of caring deeply" about things, which has both its good and bad points.
      Positive Thinking Not Working
Being a natural pessimist, positive thinking is hard for me to come by. When I am able to reach a good attitude, it does help. Just not too often.
      Xanax Working / Worked
Xanax was the first treatment given to me when job-stress anxiety started to get to me 10 years ago. I still take it as needed, and it still works when things become more than the Paxil is able to handle on its own.
    • Open Migraine Headaches

As a teenager and into my 20's, I experienced true Migraine headaches. Then I seemed to "grow out of them" and stopped having Migraines altogether. However, four years ago I started having Ophthalmologic Migraines - Aura and loss of vision mostly without pain, but sometimes aura leading to a full blown Migraine.

      Treatments

      Aspirin Somewhat Helpful
Sometimes Aspirin works to lessen the pain when I take it quick enough.
Avoid Certain Foods / Chemicals Somewhat Helpful
Too much Aspartame is definitely a trigger for my Migraines. However, eliminating Aspartame altogether has not/does not eliminate the Migraine altogether.
      Midrin Somewhat Helpful
Again, Duradrin will sometimes eliminate the pain if I take it as soon as I experience the aura, but not every time.
      Naproxen Somewhat Helpful
Same as Aspirin - it works to lessen the effects if taken quick enough.
      Tylenol Not Working
Acetaminophen has never worked well for me for any pain, and especially not for Migraine pain.

    • Open High Blood Pressure

      Treatments

      Avapro Working / Worked
Avapro worked just fine for me until my health plan removed it from their formulary. I was then placed on Lisinopril, which has actually worked better, giving me lower numbers than Avapro
Avoid Certain Foods / Chemicals Not Working
      Lisinopril Working / Worked
I've been on numerous HBP medicines over the last 10 years, but Lisinopril has been doing great for the past year.
      Verapamil Not Working
While Verapamil did lower my blood pressure, side effects became too much to handle.
