Will I Live to see 80?
I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, he said I was doing 'fairly well' for my age. (I just turned 60.) A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking him, 'Do you think I'll live to be 80?'
He asked, 'Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer or wine?'
'Oh no,' I replied.. 'I'm not doing drugs, either!'
Then he asked, 'Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?
'I said, 'Not much.... my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!'
'Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?'
'No, I don't,' I said.
He asked, 'Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?'
'No,' I said.
He looked at me and said,... 'Then, why do you even give a shit?

I went to the doctor for my yearly physical. The nurse starts with certain basics.
'How much do you weigh?' she asks. '135,' I say.
The nurse puts me on the scale. It turns out my weight is 180.
The nurse asks, 'Your height?' '5 foot 4,' I say.
The nurse checks and sees that I only measure 5'2'.
She then takes my blood pressure and tells me it is very high.
'Of course it's high!' I scream. 'When I came in here I was tall and slender! Now I'm short and fat!'
She put me on Prozac. What a bitch.
I love this.....

LOL. That must have happened to me. On mid January I was 127 lbs, then I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia, and stopped going to the gym because I was afraid to cause more pain, but I started to indulge myself with lots of treats to get comfort for the pain. The next time I went to the doctor I was 133lbs, and then the next time I went to the doctor I was 137 lbs... So I told the nurse: Each time I come I weight more, I am not coming anymore!.
I think we can all agree tonight is a historic night. Regardless of how you feel about Obama I hope we are all inspired by the amazing turnout and the emotional investment in this election we have never seen before.
Today I was doing rounds at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. It is common to have many folks hanging out in the waiting rooms outside of the surgical ICU waiting for the "5 minute at a time" visiting period to see their friends. Often these 18-20 something year old kids are waiting to visit their friends who have been shot.....some with gang names tattooed on their necks/arms/backs wait hours to see their friends. If you know me you know that I have been desperate to figure out how to engage these twenty year olds in society because I think there is so much wasted potential....and today what I saw really struck me.
At least seven of the twenty-something year olds had "I voted" stickers on...and told me they had already been to vote. I knew when I saw this it was a new day, a new day in politics...where people who have NEVER cared or NEVER felt cared about actually went out to vote.
I hope they are happy tonight. I hope they stay engaged and realize we are all in this together.
The better those who are struggling do...the better we all do.

As do others, ChipChip. Dr. Orange, thank you for sharing that. What an emotion filled day/evening this has been. Regardless of where or with what "color" or political party your loyalties lie, everyone has experienced a potentially formidable turning point in our nation's history. I, for one, am glad that our young people have invested a personal interest in the future that is to come. "God bless the United States of America."

Dr Orrange...I voted in every election since turning 21 (at that time you had to be 21 to vote). I am really happy to see youths turn out in record numbers. Make everyone part of the process. In fact, the only people I see left out of the process are the homeless veterans, who can't vote due to the fact, they have no permanent home address. This Veteran's Day, please remember those who are homeless but yet served their country in the military.
