    • About Me

Native Oregonian, I am 55 years old and have the beginnings of a common form of degenerative arthritis which I try to control through gentle exercise, dietary changes and spiritual thoughts. Aging has not been what I anticipated but then, I didn't know what to except. I tend to take one day at a time and feel blessed for any pain-free moments.

Thank you for your comment about "when it's time to leave" much food for thought there. I can see all of those things in myself yet don't have the courage to go.

Way to go on your efforts to change your life! School? Yikes? I took some night classes and the teacher jumped around and did not follow the workbook and let the girl across from me teach her own separate class to the people around her that it was too distracting to learn anything...I will give it another go, however, i like accounting and I want to be better at it.

Swimsuit? No me, tee hee hee, I wish. I have some kinda pelvis issue that keeps me from riding a bike I will be in pain for weeks, my body never adjusts to it. bummer.

Salad...my kingdom for a salad. I am allergic to lettuce so I have to eat cole slaw or a salad made from bok choi which is not bad. I don't really care for spinach salads. But I am growing some in my garden and a bunch of different fresh veggies!

Keep pluggin' on! Thanks for the note and for listening to me too!

    • Close Fibromyalgia

the VA Hospt diagnosed me with arthritis, per x-rays. However, there is persistent burning (like a sunburn) in my left shoulder area and labels have to be removed from my clothing to lessen pain. I have the worst time getting out of bed as my body feels like cement, especially in my neck. My knees feel swollen are in pain a lot. I notice more pain from sweeping the driveway or gardening. My memory is not as sharp and I feel like my balance is off. Typical arthritis meds don't help at all. Help!

      Treatments

      Acupressure Working / Worked
Gawd, no! Terribley painful and I can't stand being hugged or touched.
      Aqua Therapy Working / Worked
Heat helps lessen pain but only while in the heat.
      Heat Working / Worked
Helps while present but shortly after removal, pain returns. Pain is 24/7
      TENS Working / Worked
Irritating electrical charges are very annoying and hurt.
      Heat Working / Worked
Feels good as long as it's on. But once the heat is removed, pain returns.
    • Close Degenerative Joint Disease

Inherited the degenerative arthritis gene from my dad and dealing with it in a non-medicinal way but watching my intake of salt, walking and cutting down the hours I spend in the same chair, surfing the net. The fluff drugs I've tried so far do not help with pain. Hot showers and walking seem to be the best alternatives to drugs.

    • Open Arthritis

Mild degenerative arthritis inherited from my father. I work out on a Gazelle at a gentle to medium pace. Water aerobics help and are less intrusive than other exercise.

      Treatments

      Acupressure Working / Worked
This technique was used on my back and although it was rather annoying at first, and I hurt the next day (like being rolfed), the following day and thereafter I felt great. However, this was before I developed any signs of arthritis so I don't know how it would feel now. But I would definitely try it again if insurance paid.
      Swimming Working / Worked
Water Aerobics is ideal if you pain movement limitations in your hips, feet or shoulders. You can always modify the exercise to fit your needs. And, you will meet some nice people along the way.
    • Open Diets & Weight Maintenance

Thin as a teen, I gained muscle and weight in the Army in the late 70s, my muscle turned to fat and it's been downhill since then

      Treatments

Eating Healthier Foods Working / Worked
Worked and felt better but need snacks in between meals and I'm a sucker for potato chips. Hey, I'm Irish and need my potatoes!
      Physical Exercise Working / Worked
This plan worked the best and continues to do so. I feel better, my clothes are looser and I don't crave junk foods. My skin has improved and my arthritis is not nearly as painful
      Weight Watchers Working / Worked
Too much trouble counting things, going to meetings at night and the food in those boxes is gross. Plus, the program costs money I no longer can spare
