Close Narcolepsy
Well, Ihave been in trouble for falling asleep ever since I can remember. I was diagnosed with all sorts of conditions includng M.E. M.S. vral infections and finally thisyear it was confirmed that I have narcolepsy with cataplexy. I am now taking modafinil and chlomipramine. things seem to be getting a bit better altough I am still sleeping alot in the day. Would love to hear from other people with narcolepsy, just because it is good to chat with people who really understand.
Treatments
Close Autism / Autism Spectrum
I have a 17 year old son with autism. He has a statement of SEN, and is currently in a 16-19 year old special needs school. He is very aware of his autism and is striving to be "normal" he has recently been prescribed prozac as he is becoming anxious and depressed about his condition. He started life with severe autism and has somehow worked his way through to moderate of late, but still with severe language delay and comprehension difficulties. H
Treatments
- Early Intervention Working / Worked
- he had portage at the age of 2- it was a real help for me more than him!
- Independent Living Skills Working / Worked
- where he is now is working aon all these, he is doing really well with specialist provision, although we really had to fight to get it!
- Patience Working / Worked
- this is the hardest- but i guess the most effective, take time out when it all gets too much and then return and try gain!
- Pets Not Working
- tried that, he did not take to it at all, then the cat died and he was really traumatised and vows never to have a pet again!
- Picture / Word Schedules Working / Worked
- used when he was not speaking as a younger child, very helpful and aided his progression to speech quite well.
- Sign Language Working / Worked
- used makaton when he was younger and til he was about 10 as visual cues whilst speaking, good to get him looking and really taking in what i was saying. occassionally can still use it now in certain situations, if we are in a crowd and get separated, i can sign at him and that is very helpful knowing he can understand me.
- TEACCH Working / Worked
- all his schooling has incorporated this method to some degree, although he has always attended special units, they have sometimes been within mainstream schools, this has had a real benefit socailly.
Open Anxiety
my teenage son suffers with terrible anxiety, mainly about health issues, usually related to inhaling anything- i.e. exhaust fumes, gas, petrol fumes, smoke etc. also related to diet, healthy eating is a must!
Treatments
- Breathing Exercises Somewhat Helpful
- work to alleviate a full blown panic attack, but with supervision and not working on anxiety.
- Positive Thinking Somewhat Helpful
- working with psychologist on this one, replacing thoughts with good ones etc... think its not really going too weell, he is good at saying it is when asked, but i think its not that effective really
Open Panic Attacks
My son has suffered with these for about 2 years now. two or three really bad ones where an ambulance was called to assist him. things a little better now.
Treatments
- Psychotherapy Somewhat Helpful
- this is ongoing, proving a bit difficult due to his autism, but i think he finds it a bit helpful and it gives me some ideas on how to help him.
- Rescue Remedy Not Working
- tried this for a while, worked about twice, then he started guzzling the whole bottle!!!! really didn't have an effect, obviously!
- Prozac Working / Worked
- stopped the panics quite well! did nothing for the anxiety, but at least he can go out without returning in an ambulance!
Open Single Parenting
I have been a single parent for the last 12 years now and to be honest, i am lovin it! I have had alot of difficult times, yes, but it has also had it's advantages, having a son with special needs has given me alot of challenges, but I am glad it is this way and would not change it now.
