Here's the poem I was finally able to write for my dad. 
With a stern voice
And a heart of gold
You were the best dad ever
Soft, yet bold.
Someone I could go to
In times of dispair
No matter whatever happened
You were always right there,
To show love & support
As high as the sky
Then remind me you're watching me
By pointing at your eye.
I'll never forget
The good times we had
At the track, or a Bears game
Just me & my dad.
I love you much
I hope you are now peaceful & calm
I hope we meet again
Till then take care of mom.
