    • About Me

I live and work near a medium-sized city on the east coast. I'm divorced, no children. I share my living quarters with three friendly cats. I've had asthma my entire life. I've had emphysema for five years. Yes, I am an ex-smoker, smoke-free since August 2000. My doctor has told me that I will probably be disabled due to increasing lung problems in about seven years. Right now, I am trying to learn how to preserve my health and to work toward building a career that I can carry into my later years. I have more good days than bad. I love my life and have learned to be comfortable with myself.

    • Interests

I am very interested in delaying my pending disability for as long as possible. I want to prove the doctor wrong. I like walking. I like to read books and the internet. I like to eat. I want to learn how to cook good, healthy food that's tasty enough to share. I like music very much. I like to laugh, in spite of the serious tone of the words below. I like an amusing story, a good joke, or a bad pun.

    • Close Asthma
      Type: Childhood Asthma

I've had asthma my whole life. I'm still learning how to manage it effectively. when I was young, all that wheezing led to a lot of kidding. I became shy--and I still am shy.

      Treatments

      Albuterol Working / Worked
It's a good rescue drug for me. I use it in a nebulizer. No side effects.
      Breathing Exercises Working / Worked
I've been using breathing exercises described by Dr. Andrew Weil. Not only do the exercises help my breathing, they help me manage stress and help me keep a positive frame of mind.
      Inhaler Working / Worked
I use Combivent. It's a good rescue drug when I can't get to my nebulizer. No side effects.
      QVAR Working / Worked
It's easy to use and seems effective. No side effects.
      Singulair Somewhat Helpful
No side effects. Dosage: 10mg, once a day.
      Theophylline Somewhat Helpful
When I used this thirty years ago, it seemed to work okay. It tended to make me jittery.
    • Close GERD & Heartburn

I was just diagnosed with GERD last week. My doctor said that GERD could be an asthma trigger. I had just experienced an acid reflux incident with an Asthma response two weeks earlier. That moved me to try to understand and manage this illness.

      Treatments

Dietary Modification Too Soon to Tell
I've been advised not to go to bed less than three hours after eating.
      Prilosec Too Soon to Tell
I just started this. Dosage: 20mg, twice a day
    • Open Environmental Allergies
      Type of allergy: Allergic Rhinitis

I was tested within the last five years. I am allergic to everything they tested for, except cockroaches and poplar tree pollen. I've got asthma, too.

      Treatments

      Allergy Shots Working / Worked
I had to stop because shot clinic hours conflicted with work. I'd like to figure out how to get back on a shot schedule.
      Flonase Not Working
It wouldn't stop my runny nose.
      Singulair Somewhat Helpful
No side effects. Dosage: one 10mg tablet per day.
    • Open Shyness

I have been shy all my life. I want to change that a little and make some friends.
