I'm not sure who the author of this was but I think it is a very good writing and wanted to share it.
Strength, Spirit, Wisdom
I let my voice be heard quite loudly about things that are wrong with America. I say it because it's true, necessary and because I want all the people who died in the roots and creation of this country not to have died in vain.
The veil of a "perfect" America has been exposed throughout the decades and yet it is still one of, if not the best countries to live in the world. It's not without its hypocrisy and problems though. We all know now that America is ran a great deal like Oz.
I am one-quarter Cherokee Indian in that my mom's father was a full-blood Cherokee. Growing up, I took the story of Squanto and others a little more seriously than the rest of my classmates. I didn't watch Cowboy and Indian movies in the same light as my friends either. When we played Cowboys and Indians, I always wanted to be the "Indian".
The question though is what about America and the Fourth of July makes me proud. I'm proud of my family and their ancestors who helped build and make this country what it is. My maternal grandfather gave of his blood, sweat and tears to make this country a better place.
My parents have done the same as have my in-laws, my wife and msyelf. America is not a perfect union, but we strive to be a more perfect union. At least I can speak for myself in saying this, as well as most people I know and associate with.
I'm most definitely more proud this year than over the past eight. I have to admit that I was like Michelle Obama in not being very proud of my country over the past decade. From the witch hunt of Bill Clinton, the lies of Bill Clinton, and the blatant and continual lies of the Bush Administration. Then, the culmination of America bringing change to America with the election of Barack Obama.
I have lived in The United States of America all of my life and I'm happy and proud to be an American, but I never put us above others. I believe there are wonderful and beautiful people in every country and continent on planet earth. At times America is guilty of putting itself on a pedestal.
Many of my ancestors were directly the first people who lived in this country. I am very proud of that and proud of them, even though many died by the hands of those who later claimed to be original Americans and many who still do.

Basket thanks for posting this - it's important and I think it represents the views of most Americans - I know it represents mine. We're not perfect - won't ever be - but where else would we want to be? Speaking only for myself, with all the issues and problems yet to be solved, I'm going to stay here and try to make things better - one person, one conversation one example at a time.

This is one of the few really dee0ly thought out analysis of the US - over the past dozen years: I admire the fact the Americans, nomatter what, can always be optimistic: Muc of the last dozen years, I've wished myself sway from my country, with its neocon acolytes, Bush lovers, bigotry, racial intoleranace, and so much that has been bad. But things have improved for us too - not just Omabas's electrion, but the same here, with ZKevin Rodd - or first mandarin Speaking Prime Minister! First thing he did was to apologise to the original inhjabitants of this country for the terrible way in which whey had been treatted - especially ther "Steolen Genrations" - those small children who were rounded up, removed from their mothers, & put in Institutions - never to be returned - & all because they were the offspring of black mothers & wihite fathers!. They were to be "Assimilated" Forced not to speak their own language, & trained to be housemaids, & stockmen, if they were lucky. Best wishes, JaneD.
