About Me
My husband and I have been married 32 years. We have two grown sons and two grandchildren, a boy and a girl. I've had a varied career in music, liturgy, library work and directing a couple of non-profits. My husband is so supportive and my best friend. I'm so grateful for that. I try to live in the present moment, and stay grateful.

Close COPD & Emphysema
After smoking for 28 years, I quit in Feb, 1998. But it's been down-hill since, and my diagnosis of asthma was finally switched to Emphysema in summer of 2006. I'm not on oxygen - yet, but it's a constant challenge to manage symptoms, and stay active. Was using a nebulizer for 4.5 years, but in May 08, pulmonologist had me stop using the nebulizer, because I was over-inflating my lungs. Now I just use inhalers.
Treatments
- Albuterol Somewhat Helpful
- HFA inhaler
- Massage Working / Worked
- every 3 weeks, deep tissue. Helps to eliminate toxins, and loosen mucus.
- Nasonex Working / Worked
- controls post nasal drip
- Robaxin Not Working
- muscle relaxant for chest wall pain. Don't take it very often.
- Singulair Somewhat Helpful
- take every evening
- Spiriva Working / Worked
- Take ever other day, otherwise I have a gripping feeling in my lungs. But it helps.
- Symbicort Working / Worked
- Excellent!
Close GERD & Heartburn
In additon to GERD, I also have COPD, so the acid reflux makes my breathing worse. I've been on medication for GERD for about a year. Now it's getting worse, and I have inflammation in the esophagus and duodenum. Recently, I've also been getting painful spasms in my larynx from the reflux. My gastroenterologist has sent me to speech therapy for diet and lifestyle modifications.
Treatments
- Antacids Not Working
- Use only as a backup.
- Dietary Modification Working / Worked
- My speech therapist started me on this program. It's a difficult diet to follow, but very worth it.
- Prilosec Working / Worked
- I have an Rx for 40 mg which I take in the morning. Then I take 40 mg of OTC Omeprazole before supper. My insurance co only covers the morning dose.
- Raising Bed Position Working / Worked
- This helps a great deal. I ended up getting an adjustable bed because of my other health problems.
Open Degenerative Disc Disease
I had C4-C6 fusion surgery in 2003 for spinal stenosis caused by osteoarthritis. My neurosurgeon mentioned that I could have a recurrence elsewhere along the spine. Now I'm pretty sure I've got it in the T-spine. Upper back pain, and nerve pain around chest and down both arms. Treatment complicated by active COPD and GERD. I'm on SSDI.
Treatments
- Hydrocodone Working / Worked
- I don't like the side effects at all, but it does help as long as I stay on top of the pain.
- Lyrica Working / Worked
- Works well, but I've started to gain weight, so trying to back off a bit. I was taking 50 mg am and 100 mg pm.
- Walking Somewhat Helpful
- Eases depression.
