I am 28 years old and was diagnosed with IC about 4 and 1/2 years ago after going from one urologist to another until finally being correctly diagnosed after a year of pain. I was also diagnosed with hypertonic pelvic floor dysfunction (pelvic muscles being extremely tight causing pain, spasming, etc.). However, I do not have the frequency that usually accompanies IC. I seemed to be in almost a 'remission' from this except for the occasional flare up until more recently when I have been getting more frequent and longer lasting flare ups. Sometimes which wake me up from a deep sleep due to the pain. I pray for a day when a cure is found for IC.

Close Interstitial Cystitis (IC)
I was diagnosed with IC as well as hypertonic pelvic floor dysfunction in 2003. However, the pain started about a year before I finally got a correct diagnosis.
Treatments
- Elavil Working / Worked
- Have been taking this daily since 2003 for chronic pain. I have had to lower the dose due to side effects, but seems to help other than my flare ups which have become more frequent since this past summer.
- Elmiron Not Working
- I took for a short time in 2003, but had to stop due to side effects. Mainly severe stomach upset etc. Lost a lot of weight very quickly due to lack of appetite and stomach/intestinal upset.
- Macrobid Working / Worked
- Been on a low dose of this medication daily since 2003 to help prevent infections.
- Pyridium Working / Worked
- Take as needed when I have flare ups.
- Valium Working / Worked
- approx. 1 mg as needed (I try to use very infrequently) when the pain is extremely bad...more for the hypertonic pelvic floor dysfunction when it becomes unbearable
Close Rape
I was date raped at 15. This was my first sexual experience of any kind. I was very naive & trusting and didn't even really know what rape was at that time. My urologist feels that some of my medical issues (IC & tight pelvic musles) may be related to the rape even though the symptoms relating to my bladder didn't occur until many years later. Does anyone else have info/experience with the two being related?
Treatments
- Psychotherapy Somewhat Helpful
- Have gone to counseling on and off over the years. I have some anxiety issues especially with major life transitions that the therapists feel is related to the rape as a post traumatic stress type thing.
Open Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
I was diagnosesd with IBS at 14, but had symptoms probably since early childhood. For me, it comes and goes. Depends on stress, anxiety levels etc.
Treatments
- High Fiber Diet Working / Worked
- I have been trying to increase my fiber intake on a daily basis.
- Imodium Working / Worked
