    • About Me

I graduated Chico State in 94 and work at a local pharmacy. I was diagnosed with CMT about 5 years ago. My symptoms were very mild at first but it has progressed to very noticable. Walking long distances and going up stairs are the hardest for me. Concentrating on my every step takes a lot. I hate the idea that I have to think ahead at my obsticles to every thing I do and go. I used to be an atheletic person and now everything is lost. I have great family and friends but still want to meet people who have CMT because no one really knows how I am feeling and what I have to go through on a daily basis besides other people with CMT.

Don't let let CMT get you down. Have you looked at getting AFO braces. I've found they help me quite a bit. Chico State... I know where that's at at. I was stationed at Beale Air Force Base in northern California from 1981 to 1984. As a young single fellow I used to like to go to Chico and party with the co-eds on the weekends. Chico was a great party school. I lived there (Beale) again when my active duty wife was sent from Germany back to Beale in 1992. We lived there for another 4 years before moving to Edwards Air Force Base in 1996 and eventually to out current home in Ft. Worth, Texas, in 2003. I love that part of California north of Sacramento from the coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Beautiful country! I liked the desert at Edwards, but I like northern Cali much better. On getting back to CMT - don't let it get you down. I'd recommend mild weights on a bench, and mild free weights, swimming, a rowing machine (although rowing boat, kayak, or canoe is also a good activity ror those of us with CMT when done in moderation) and a recumbent stationary bicycle. regular bicycle's are OK as well - but with CMT I much prefer on road riding as opposed to mountain biking. Just remember, with CMT always exercise in moderation. Doing "the burn" isn't the best thing for nerve weakened muscles. Exercise in moderation and maintain a regular low-impact fitness schedule and you'll be all right. One thing I've found with weakened legs that helps is to also watch my own weight - no need to over load already weakened legs - it make it much easier to get around. these are things I've found that have helped me for the almost the last 20-years since learning I have CMT.

I was diagnosed about 5 years ago with CMT. My symptoms were mild but have progressed through the years. My feet do not lift in the appropriate time of walking which causes me to fall and/or trip a lot. Going up stairs is he hardest but handrails do help. My toes are starting to curl which cause shoes to rub the top of my toes. My hands are atrophing which makes it difficult to button pants and open containers. My awkward walking is what bugs me the most.

      Treatments

      Physical Therapy Somewhat Helpful
Physical therapy is helpful in the way that it builds mucsle to compensate in areas that wont gain muscle. I think it's a stress releiver as well.
