I am bipolar complicated by anxiety

Close Bipolar Disorder
I was DX in the mid 70s and I have let BP rob me of some of the most important things in my life. Inspite of that I have had a good life. If I could go back and change things, I would not have quit my meds so often, I would not have hidden my illness and I would have reached out for help more often. Whenever BP is winning I can always find something in my treatment plan that I am not doing. I am responsible for my own happiness.
Treatments
- Benadryl Working / Worked
- Helps me to stay asleep and get a full nights sleep. Without it I wake about 3 or 4 am and can't go back to sleep. Best non prescription sleep aid I have used and it works with my meds.
- Calcium Working / Worked
- Calcium is an important component of a healthy diet. I have been taking 600 MG of Caltrate 600 +D supplement since 2005
- Depakote Working / Worked
- Used in place of Lithium Used with Welbutrin to even out the cycles. Used Paxil first before Welbutrin but it reduced my sex drive to zero
- Fish Oil Working / Worked
- Started taking 1000 MG Omega-3 supplement in 2005 to contribute to my heart & Vascular health
- Group Therapy Working / Worked
- Lamictal Working / Worked
- discontinued, couldn't afford the copay.
- Lithium Not Working
- Mixed with Desipramine they made me feel like I was living under water, I was slow, tired and often depressed
- SAM-e Working / Worked
- Advertised for joint comfort, mood support and liver health. My big problem is fighting depression and urges to isolate. Aware that this med is not recommended for people with bipolar because it can cause manic. I am on my 5th month and my mood is up, feel pep in morning but not manic. I am trying to manage my treatment without the benefit of prescription meds for a while. http://www.dbsalliance.org/site/PageServer?pagename=about_publications_supplements
- Vitamin B12 Working / Worked
- Taking 1000 mcg of B-12 supplement since 2005 because I have read that it is used in the body to manufacture serotonin and other neurotransmitters. It is well known that deficiency of either nutrient is associated with depression.
- Wellbutrin Working / Worked
- Worked for me with Depakote

I am Bipolar and I am looking for a supportive community to refer my family and friends.
Open Alcoholism
I'm a third generation Alcoholic. Had problems as a teen but have managed to stay sober for several years. I seem to have what some call dry drunks related to my bipolar illness where I isolate and make bad decisions as if I was binging.
Treatments
- 12 Step Program Working / Worked
- AA Meetings Working / Worked
- Al-Anon Working / Worked
- Willpower Working / Worked
- I know that Alcohol will affect my bipolar meds so I avoid using it. My life is hard enough without booze complicating things. Not to mention the bad memories of from earlier times.
Open Arthritis
Suspect my problem is age related.
Treatments
- Tylenol Working / Worked
- Temporary relief
- Physical Exercise Working / Worked
- Notice when my activity is low, more joints begin to hurt for longer times.
Open Anger Management
I believe anger just like self preservation is something everyone has. Those of us with BP got a little more anger and a little less self preservation so we have a little more of a challenge managing them. But it can be managed! I took a course in anger management where most of the students there were court ordered by a judge. i learned a lot. Anger can be managed. Anyone who has anger problems and says he/she is too old or too bipolar to change should be avoided!
