Especially if you live in a swing state...
In 2006, the power to throw out a voter's registration was given to Secretaries of State everywhere. In the past few years there has been a purging of millions of voters from the rosters, without being notified. Many of these people were low-income or minority voters, and many live in the important states of this election.
Also, election laws have changed in many, many states. Many states are requiring a photo ID this year. Please make sure you know your states CURRENT election laws, especially on mail-in or absentee votes (absentee ballots from soldiers in Iraq are being tossed as having "no witness"), and especially if you are a first-time voter.
Make sure your name is registered as it is on your photo ID. Even typos, even hyphens. They are pulling people's votes as invalid if they don't match.
If you have been unfortunate enough to have your home foreclosed on, please make sure your vote is registered as your CURRENT address. They are challenging voter's over addresses from foreclosed homes.
Make sure you are not given a "provisional ballot" if you can help it. They throw these out all the time. Many first-time voters are given provisional ballots no matter what. Use your best handwriting, make sure you write the correct zip code, etc.. If you need a witness, demand one of the election official do it. If you need your photo ID, make sure you show it. Don't give them any reason to toss it.
No matter who you are voting for McCain, Obama, or Bob Barr...please protect your vote. More information at:

Wonderful advice! Didn't know that about the Provisional ballots. Wish I had, since I knew quite a few folks who had to use them...but anything that isn't the real thing on the actual day, to me is suspect. Luckily (from my point of view)it didn't matter this time, but it could have. Glad you posted this..we might need it again in 4 years :)
