One of the fun things we did as kids at Christmastime was make apple Santas. What's an apple Santa, you ask? It's a Santa made with an apple. Clever, huh? What will we need?
1 big red delicious Christmas apple
Some marshmallows,,,the big ones
Whole cloves
Fresh cranberries
Cotton,,,not the balls,,the rolled kind
Red food coloring
Toothpicks
A few raisins, if you're adventurous.
Okay, to work. Insert 2 toothpicks on the bottom of the apple, near the front and 1 in the back near the middle to make a tripod. Take the stem out and replace it with a toothpick, leaving it kinda long. Put a toothpick on each side of the apple to make the arms. Push a marshmallow onto the stem toothpick, making sure a little sticks out the top. This will be the head. Push 2 cloves into the head to make the eyes and one just below to make the nose. Dip a toothpick into the food color and draw a mouth under the nose. Take a bit of cotton and form it into a small cone. Stick a cranberry on the pick coming out of the head. Wet a spare marshmallow with your finger and rub a little off and rub it around the cranberry. This will act as "glue". Place the cone around the cranberry where you smeared the glue and you've got a hat. Here comes the tricky part. Form a very small roll of cotton, just long enough to go from the face to the middle of the front. Smear some glue and push the cotton on. Make another, longer roll of cotton, long enough to reach all the way around the apple at the middle. Bring the 2 ends together and push a clove in to attach it. Now for the arms and legs. Push cranberries on each arm, but let a little of the pick stick out the end. Pinch off a bit of the glue marshmallow and stick on the end. Now, you've got arms and gloves. Stick cranberries on the legs. If you're adventurous, leave just enough pick showing to put a raisin on for the boots. If not, just add another cranberry. And there, you have another bit of the Magic of Christmas!
