3 Main Ways to Improve Emotional Health
Posted in Stress Manageme... by Susan Quinn on Aug 15, 2011
There are things that you can do without visiting a professional to improve your own emotional health. Try one or all of these self-care suggestions:

Expression of Feelings: If you are feeling sadness or anxiety, the healthy thing to do is express these feelings. If you keep them inside the body responds and releases harmful stress hormones (especially Cortisol) and this can cause many physical problems including high blood pressure, ulcers, back pain, irritable bowel syndrome and many others.

If you don't know how to express feelings in a way that is appropriate get help for this by seeking counseling or taking assertiveness training.

Breathing and Relaxing: If you get into a habit of noticing when you start to feel uptight about something and take three slow deep breaths, immediately you will create a feeling of well-being and relaxation for yourself. This can be one of the most useful gifts you can give yourself. Once you do this a few times you will be amazed at how easy it is to control your emotional state.

Regular Routines for Maintaining a Feeling of Well-Being: Putting in place rituals of self care will give you a feeling of being in control of your life. It is very important to do something for yourself the very first thing in the morning. It only needs to be for five minutes. The important thing is the regularity. Try doing one self-care first thing in the morning for a week and then reevaluate whether you want to continue. Some examples would be meditating, stretching, exercising, praying, and listing three different things you are grateful for.

Physical health is connected to mental and emotional health.

Taking care of your body is a powerful first step towards mental and emotional health. The mind and the body are linked. When you improve your physical health, you’ll automatically experience greater mental and emotional well-being. For example, exercise not only strengthens our heart and lungs, but also releases endorphins, powerful chemicals that energize us and lift our mood.
