How do I choose the right wheelchair for a spinal cord injury?
Posted in Veterans by Sarah Williams Volf on Oct 26, 2009
There are so many different designs to choose from and it is imperative that you find the right wheelchair to meet your individual needs. There are manual wheelchairs, folding wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs and specialized sports wheelchairs. Choosing a wheelchair can be extremely overwhelming but there are excellent resources to help you. It is a good ides to consult with a physical therapist in this process of decision making and always try out more than one wheelchair!

You will need to consider many factors when selecting a wheelchair such as your level and type of injury, your age and body type. Other questions to consider may include whether you will be using your wheelchair indoors or outdoors, how long you will be in your wheelchair or will you be using your chair for wheelchair sports?

If you have the ability to push your chair you will be looking for a manual wheelchair. You may choose a rigid chair if you have good upper body strength, are young and active and want to be as independent as possible. Conversely you may choose a folding wheelchair if you have limited upper body strength or coordination and may never be independent. There are many different types of electric wheelchairs with different levels of speed, operation and sophistication on the market today.

We have seen many superb lightweight Sport Wheelchairs at in the adaptive sports fraternity. These chairs are very specialized and greatly enhance performance by utilizing the latest technology, material such as carbon fiber to ensure ultimate speed and maneuverability.

My advice – seek good impartial advice from professionals. Your wheelchair is critical for your independence and quality of life.
