Eric began working professionally youth in 1988, running after-school art programs in New York City while studying Art Therapy at the New School for Social Research. Shortly after he discovered his passion for working with children with Autism, which he did over the next decade in Special Education Pre-Schools, therapeutic nurseries, day-treatment facilities, summer camps, and after-school programs. During this time he also worked at the Children’s Television Workshop, developing educational materials for various Sesame Street educational outreach programs, and earned degrees in Art Therapy, Early Childhood Education and Human Development.
In 2001 Eric founded
COMMUNITY of UNITY to empower young people to achieve success and fulfillment by awakening an understanding of their unique purpose and potential, which he calls a person's SONG. COMMUNITY of UNITY has created, designed and delivered Life Skills and Youth Culture Building theories and programs that have reached hundreds of schools, enrichment programs, therapeutic environments, and tens of thousands of youth, families, and educators around the world. In North America, over 200 schools have engaged professional development workshops, support services, and materials.
Eric is a recognized leader in the fields of youth development, urban education, school culture, youth spirituality & empowerment, and relationship building. In 2010 a Doctoral Dissertation, “Creating Sacred Space with Youth”, the result of over a year of research on Eric’s work by Dr. Josh Borkin, EdD, was published at Teachers College at Columbia University.
Eric is a collaborator and presenter to organizations including A Better Chance, Bank Street College of Education, BOOST Conference, The Institute for Student Achievement, HealthCorp, Northside Center for Child Development, The New York City Department of Education, Union Seminary, Face2Face, Steve’s Camp at Horizon Farms, Auburn Theological Seminary, The YMCA, The Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development, The Center for Mindfulness: The University of Massachusetts Medical School, Hoops 4 Hope(South Africa & Zimbabwe), Hunter College, The Genesis Society, Big Brother/Big Sister, and The Pollsmore Prison of The Department of Correctional Services in South Africa where male inmates engage in the meaningful awakening of the seven instruments of the COMMUNITY of UNITY TOOLKIT©.
Additionally, Eric is the host of
YOUTH EMPOWERED, a weekly internet Radio show, a founding member of the New Design High School (Community of Unity is a lead partner), a founder and lead partner of New Design Middle School, and a founder and lead partner of Steve's Camp at Horizon Farms.
Most important of all, Eric is a husband and father.
